The whistle blew, but Sydney Miller didn’t move. She glared at the goalkeeper for seven seconds before jogging up and unleashing a shot that ruffled the net and sent her teammates into a frenzy.
Staredown successful, state championship achieved.
First Colonial rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime at 3-3 and eventually beat visiting Briar Woods 3-2 in penalty kicks to win the Class 5 girls soccer state title Wednesday.
“In U10 I remember my coach saying to me if you ever take a PK, look the goalkeeper in the eye for a solid five to six seconds because it makes them real nervous,” Miller said. “More pressure on them than you, then bang it in the corner.”

Debuting this season as part of a groundbreaking collaboration between the two leagues, the NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup kicks off July 19 featuring all 14 NWSL clubs and the six teams with the most points achieved in LIGA MX Femenil Clausura and Apertura during 2023, including Tigres UANL, Club América, Chivas de Guadalajara, Rayadas de Monterrey, Pachuca and Tijuana.

WHEN​

Kicking off on July 19, the 33-match tournament will consist of 30 group stage contests followed by a four-team semifinal round on August 6. CPKC Stadium, home of the Kansas City Current, in Kansas City, Missouri, will host the doubleheader semifinal round. The championship match will be staged at Toyota Field in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, October 25.

HOW TO WATCH​

CBS Sports will be the exclusive English-language distributor of all 33 Summer Cup games, with every match set to stream live on Paramount+, 11 matches simulcasting on CBS Sports Golazo Network and 12 matches simulcasting on CBS Sports Network, including the semifinals and championship match.

TUDN, the sports programming branch of Spanish-language network Univision, will air three group stage matches while NWSL+ will serve as the Spanish-language home for the remaining group stage matches in the U.S.

She was named Five Star Preps Co-Player of the Year with teammate and fellow signee Nyla Blue, and she was chosen to participate in the 2023 Girls High School All-American Game, where she was named a Top 15 Performer by Top Drawer Soccer. She plays club soccer for FC Alliance, earning All-Conference honors.

A two-time All-State and four-time All-Region and All-District nominee, Blue spent her freshman season at Girls Preparatory School before arriving at Bearden for her final three seasons. She served as captain during her senior campaign and earned 2023 High School All-America honors. A participant in the 2023 Girls All-America Game, she earned Best XI and Co-MVP honors. Other 2023 accolades include: TSWA First Team All-State, Five Star Preps Co-Player of the Year, Sports Illustrated Top 21 Top High School Players in the Nation, USA Today Preseason Player to Watch, and United Soccer Coaches All-South Team. 2023 (Sophomore) Appeared in 17 matches during the season… Scored her lone goal of the season against Baylor, tying the match 2-2 in the 87th minute… Recorded her lone start of the season against West Virginia, where she played in a season high 76 minutes. Finished the year with 13 shots and seven on goal.


2022 (Freshman): In her first season as a Bearcat she appeared in all 17 games with four starts… Finished the season with one and three assist in 554 minutes on the pitch… Notched her first career goal against Stony Brook on Sept. 1, when she also played a career-high 70 minutes… Made her colligate debut against Northern Kentucky on Aug. 18.

2024 USL W League Final Preview: NC Courage U23 vs. Colorado Storm​

A new champion will be crowned this weekend as NC Courage U23 and Colorado Storm compete in the 2024 USL W League Final. Both teams have impressed all season, but only one can walk away with the title.

Here’s everything you need to know before kickoff:

Western Conference champion Colorado Storm will take on Eastern Conference champion NC Courage U23 in a clash between two of the best teams in the League.

Colorado Storm (13-1-1) has come in and absolutely dominated in its first season in the W League. Since winning the Mountain Division title, the team has looked strong in all three playoff matches, all of which on the road. The Storm clinched the Western Conference title after two wins against veteran sides of California Storm and FC Olympia, then advanced to the Final after taking down Detroit City FC. All three opponents were undefeated prior to facing Colorado Storm.

The defensive unit of Caley Swierenga, Avery Vander Ven, Hannah Gallegos and goalkeeper Addie Todd has been nearly perfect. The Storm has allowed only two goals, including regular and postseason, when all four of them are on the field. Not to mention Gallegos can be dangerous on the offensive end as well, and she nearly gave the Storm its first goal against Detroit, but her header bounced just over the crossbar.

Other goal-scoring threats for the Storm include Reese McDermott, Sydney Cheesman and Jadyn Goodrich, who have all scored this postseason. McDermott recorded both goals in the 2-1 win over Detroit, while Cheesman and Goodrich contributed to the first two playoff wins, and both were shots from outside of the box. The variety of ways the Storm can score and the number of offensive standouts will require the Courage’s defensive to stay locked in for the entire match.

Just like last year, the Courage are heading to the Final with a record of 14-0-1 following an impressive postseason run. The team outscored its opponents 9-1 in the first three playoff matches, with the most impressive win coming in the last round. After Tennessee SC scored a penalty kick to tie the game and send it into extra time, 17-year-old Syrianna Davis smashed the game-winner from outside of the box to keep the team’s hopes of a championship alive.

The key to the Courage coming out with the win on Saturday will be the leadership from the returning players. Starters like Mackenzie Geigle, Hannah Jibril, Taylor Chism and Phoebe Goldthwaite all experienced the tough, extra time loss in last year’s final. This season, the Courage have a shot at redemption at home in front of its own fans and can cap off an amazing season with a trophy.
