Tennessee soccer lacks ‘competitive fight’ in loss to Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY — Aside from injury, everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Tennessee soccer on Sunday.

The Lady Vols lost, 4-0, to Kentucky, continuing a five-match winless run, with just one remaining regular-season game. Tennessee only has one more chance to compete, something Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt believes didn’t happen in the loss.

“We didn’t show up to compete,” Kirt said. “You have got to compete. Five shots on goal, four goals, that’s not competing.”

The Lady Vol’s attack produced 10 shots, six of which came on target. In many games, that would be enough to produce a goal, but it wasn’t on Sunday. When the moment was there for Tennessee to get back into the game, they faltered again and again.

Tennessee also took seven corner kicks, one of its strengths so far this season. Normally, that would be enough to give the Lady Vols something, but when it came time to win the battles in both boxes, they didn’t do enough.

“It goes back to our competitive fight and ability to produce in the moment,” Kirt said. “We haven’t done that with a level of consistency.”

Tennessee conceded very early in the game, letting in a corner kick goal just six minutes into the game. Although the Lady Vols have been strong throughout the year in dealing with set pieces, they failed at dealing with Kentucky’s first set piece.

Later in the game, Makala Woods destroyed Tennessee’s defense, scoring her first career hat trick. Tennessee’s defense and goalkeeping had no response for Woods’ presence within the team.

With 30 minutes left, Tennessee started making mass substitutions, trying to find any possible response to its four-goal deficit. The Lady Vols didn’t find an answer no matter how deep into their bench they went.

“They’ve clearly shown the ability to get stuck in and compete,” Kirt said. “Other days like today, we don’t. We get punished for it, and that’s on me to make sure our team is prepared and ready to go. We weren’t today.”

Kentucky didn’t create too many problems offensively. The Wildcats earned three corner kicks and put five shots on target, but almost every time they got a chance to score, they did. That was the difference between a competitive match and the blowout that happened Sunday in Lexington.

Even Ally Zazzara, Tennessee’s normally trustworthy goalkeeper, didn’t find consistency. She let in four goals on five shots faced and was pulled with half an hour left.

“Her mentality and controlling her box, her voice, her presence, all of it I thought was inconsistent,” Kirt said. “Talk about our competitiveness in every line, it’s our goal against all lines.”

Tennessee now finds itself in a simple situation. A win over Florida on Wednesday sends the Lady Vols to Pensacola, Florida for the SEC Tournament. A draw or a loss eliminates Tennessee, ending its season.

A good performance isn’t enough for Tennessee on Wednesday, unlike prior moments this season. The Lady Vols have to end the match with more goals than their opponent.

Wednesday’s match isn’t just a test of Tennessee’s ability. It’s a test of how willing the Lady Vols are to make sure every aspect of the game in their control is executed perfectly.

“It’s a gut check for them of who they want to be about,” Kirt said. “Are we going to be tough and compete, or are we just going to go through the motions?”

Is he talking to himself? Don't see a lot of fire from the bench.

The only result that gets Tennessee to the SEC Tournament is a win over Florida on Wednesday.
Mizzou will be big Gator fans, they need them to either tie or win over the Lady Vols to get in.

If Tennessee does win, they would be the 9th seed and play against the 8th seed Kentucky on Sunday at 5:30 PM in the first round.
If Tennessee gets by Kentucky, they would face the #1 seed Mississippi State Tuesday at 5:30 PM in the quarterfinals.
Our Semifinal match would be 4:30 Thursday.
Final would be Sunday 2:30pm.

Having watched all the LV games this season, how do you feel about tomorrow?
The thing that concerns me, Florida knows a tie knocks Tennessee out. Their season is over, but now they have something to play for. And you know the Gators would love to end our season. So, they are gonna park the bus and start playing defense right off the bat. Lady Vols are gonna have to be aggressive which leaves us vulnerable for a counter. But I believe this team will come through and make it to Pensacola.

Knowing that they are likely to park 4 on the back line it would make sense to us to add a forward and go with a 3 front. My guess is that we roll out the same formation and get no pressure on the goal. Hope I am wrong, but it feels that we’ve followed this path all season.

SEC Finale on Wednesday
Florida ends its season Wednesday when it plays host to Tennessee. This is one of two Southeastern Conference matches originally set for Sept. 26 that Hurricane Helene pushed to Oct. 30.

These are the final two matches of SEC regular-season action, as the other 12 teams finished on Oct. 27. Both matches have a SEC storyline:

Tennessee at Florida
Florida's season ends Wednesday as the Gators are mathematically eliminated from the SEC Tournament. Tennessee must win to advance to the SEC Tournament as the ninth seed. A tie or loss and the Lady Vols do not advance to Pensacola.

Mississippi State at South Carolina
The Bulldogs already secured its first SEC regular-season title and the top-seed in the SEC Tournament. MSU will be looking to become the fifth team to post an undefeated record since the league began awarding a regular-season title in 2000 (Florida 9-0 in 2000; Florida 11-0 in 2008; South Carolina 11-0 in 2016; Alabama 10-0 in 2022). South Carolina can claim the SEC Tournament's third seed with a win or tie on Wednesday. A loss to MSU places the Gamecocks No. 4 overall.

2024 SEC Tournament Schedule

Florida Loses 1-0 to Oklahoma
Florida soccer lost 1-0 to Oklahoma on Oct. 27 in the penultimate match of regular-season play.

OU scored on its first shot of the match in the 11th minute. Off Cassie Clifton's throw in, Ella Pappas sent the ball to center of box where Hadley Murrell used her right-foot to one-touch it in from 12 yards.

Florida created some great chances, especially in the second half. With 14 minutes remaining, Lena Bailey won the ball at midfield and moved through the field. She found Skye Barnes just wide of the box. Barnes took a few touches before sending a cross that Madison Jones' raised foot just missed. Delaney Tellex also had a look as the ball traveled to the far post before it was cleared.

A couple of minutes later, Jones' 25-yard free kick was headed just wide by senior Madison Young.

"Honestly, the only thing I think we didn't do up to our standard was literally their one chance. We just switched off and didn't track a player. But for 90 minutes, I thought we had a great intensity. We had a really competitive mentality. We created chances, especially in the second half," Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon said. "I'm really, really, really proud of the fight so I'm sad for our players, because they deserved more than this."

About Tennessee:
Tennessee turned in a 9-7-4 record in 2023 and tied for eighth with its Southeastern Conference regular-season record of 3-4-3. The Lady Vols' 2023 season ended with a NCAA second round 2-1 loss at Nebraska.

Graduate Sammi Woods is the Lady Vols points (10) leader and shares the goals lead (4) with Macaira Midgley. Sophomore Ally Brown's five assists top the Lady Vols. Junior Ally Zazzara has started each match and owns a goals-against-average of 1.30.

Joe Kirt is in his third season leading the Lady Vols.

This was an enjoyable watch. You had a program that started from scratch, and 4 years later won the NCAA over UNC. Those freshmen believed in a coach that would put all the pieces in place. There is something very admirable about winning in a place that hadn’t won before, like Tony Vitello. That is what is so frustrating about how Pensky bolted. We had everything in place to take it to the next level and instead of seeing it through, he went and took a job at a place that had just won the NC.

MATCH CENTRAL: Tennessee at Florida

IMG_1528.jpeg

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Tennessee will play its final match of the regular season Wednesday, traveling to Florida for a 7 p.m. ET match.
Hurricane Helene forced this match to be rescheduled 34 days later than the original date (Sept. 26).

The Lady Vols (7-5-4, 2-4-3) look to clinch a spot in the SEC Tournament with a win over Florida (4-7-6, 1-6-2).

MATCHUP HISTORY: Tennessee is 15-18-3 all-time versus Florida and has won its past seven matchups against the conference foe. Last season, the Lady Vols defeated the Gators 2-0 at Regal Stadium.

SCOUTING THE GATORS: Florida is coming off a 1-0 loss against Oklahoma, who scored an 11th minute goal to hold off the Gators. Vera Bloom leads UF in goals (3) and points (7) this season as Njerri Butts leads the squad in assists. Alexa Goldberg has started all 17 matches in goal for the Gators, notching 42 saves.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS: Graduate Sammi Woods leads UT in points (10) and is tied with Mac Midgley with four goals on the season. Ally Brown has paced the Big Orange with three assists on the year as well, while also averaging over 89 minutes per game.

SEC TOURNAMENT IMPLICATIONS: The top 12 teams in the SEC qualify for the SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Florida. Tennessee is currently in 14th place in conference standings with nine points. With a win over Florida, UT could surpass Missouri and Oklahoma in conference standings to earn a spot in the tournament as the ninth seed.
