Tennessee soccer defeats Kentucky, advances in SEC Tournament
Tennessee soccer needed to avenge its last loss, and it did just that.
The Lady Vols opened their SEC Tournament with a 1-0 win over Kentucky in Pensacola, Florida. No. 9 seed Tennessee (9-5-4) put on a much better performance after losing to the Wildcats (11-4-4) seven days ago.
Sammi Woods opened the scoring with her first goal in over a month. Although Sarah Bridenstine's penalty was saved, the Lady Vols didn't need the security of a second goal. Tennessee faced 15 shots but didn't concede for the second consecutive game.
With the win, Tennessee continues its SEC Tournament campaign and will take on Mississippi State in Tuesday's quarterfinal round.
Here's how the Lady Vols kept their season alive.
Mac Midgley, Sammi Woods connect for opening goal
Fifteen minutes in, Mac Midgley sent a long pass to Woods just in front of the 18-yard box. With one touch, Woods lofted the ball over Kentucky's goalkeeper for the opening goal of the match.
Coming into the SEC Tournament, Woods had not scored since Sept. 22 against Alabama. She increased her total to five goals with the strike.
Kentucky and Tennessee combined for just five first-half shots. The Wildcats put two on target, and both were saved by Cayden Norris. Tennessee's only shot on target was the opening goal from Woods.
Cayden Norris earns second straight shutout
After getting very limited playing time all season, Tennessee head coach Joe Kirt decided to start Norris against Florida on Wednesday. She shut out the Gators that night and shut out the Wildcats in her second career start.
Norris finished the game with five saves while also playing a crucial role in stopping Kentucky's crosses. This season, the freshman from Johnson City has saved all seven shots she has faced across four matches played.
The road ahead
Coming into Sunday, Tennessee was No. 50 in the NCAA's RPI. With the win against a team above them, the Lady Vols will see that ranking improve.
Tennessee's next match comes Tuesday against Mississippi State, the No. 1 seed and regular-season conference champion. A loss won't significantly hurt the Lady Vols, and a win over the Bulldogs would see their tournament position massively improve.
Three Lady Vols make All-SEC teams
Reese Mattern, Midgley and Ally Brown received recognition from the SEC's coaches as members of the All-SEC teams this season.
Mattern was a member of the All-Freshman team while Midgley and Brown earned spots on the All-SEC third team. All three players received their first all-conference honor.
