Softball's Geer, Koenig Win PGF 18U Title - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics

IRVINE, Calif. -- Incoming Tennessee softball players Megan Geer and Taylor Koenig continue to show the championship mettle that should make them fit in perfectly with the Orange and White.

On Saturday, Geer and Koenig helped So Cal Athletics 18U Gold win its fourth consecutive Premier Girls Fastpitch 18U Premier Division national championship with a 3-2 win over Team Mizuno at Bill Barber Park.

Geer and Koenig will join Tennessee in the 2013-14 academic year. Both are proven power hitters who will enhance a potent UT squad that averaged 6.64 runs per game (tied for sixth in the nation) and finished as the national runner-up in 2013.

"These are two of the best athletes we have ever recruited," Tennessee softball co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "Both have home run power. Megan Geer is a speedy second baseman and outfielder who hits a lot of long balls and bats third for the So Cal Athletics. Taylor Koenig is a third baseman very much like UT alum and All-American Tonya Callahan. She has legitimate power and soft hands at third base. We are very proud of both of their accomplishments."

The LVs recently added another class of '15 commitment, C/1B Haley Bearden of Clarksville HS.

Behind the plate, Bearden was nearly impossible to steal on. Only two runners attempted to take second base during state and Bearden easily gunned both down. Her rocket arm was enough of a deterrent for the opposing team. But Bearden also had a solid year at the plate while helping her team post a program-best 38 victories last spring.

...The Lady Wildcats’ coaching staff showed their faith in Bearden by placing her No. 3 in the batting lineup. Bearden responded with a batting average of .448 average with 52 hits, 13 doubles, six triples and 20 RBIs.

The LVs now have a nation-leading 17 commitments for the next 3 classes (6 2014, 8 2015, 3 2016).

Seems strange to grab commitments from kids who are, what, high school freshmen? You have to do it to keep other teams from taking good prospects, but at the same time you may miss out on those players who develop into great prospects a little later, when, say, there are 16 or 17 and not 14/15.

i agree armchair, there should be no contact allowed until there juniors in high school,in my opinion,14/15 is a bit early for deciding what school your going to commit to,it is a lot for a young person to decide on and it would free up the coaches as far as to when to start recruiting a player, I'm for this in all sports too

The LVs have recently added commitments from Maya Mathis (2015, 3B/SS, Baylor School) and Ashlee Snyder (2016, 2B, Lakewood HS, Lakewood, CA).

With 9 verbals already, it's looking like the '15 class will be the largest class the Weeklys have ever signed at UT.
