Lady Vols Survive Via Patch

The patch is a temporary thing to appease the diehards and then the team will be the Tennessee Vols. Not to upset anybody, but the Lady Vol logo is pretty terrible looking now. How old is it--30 or more years? It looks like a very old design.

I believe the logo, at least for the patch purposes, is going to be redesigned and updated. Not sure if that will cross over to the LVs basketball uniforms.

We agree on several things, but not on the subject of the Lady Vols name or logo. I love it the way it is.

If Hart had come in and decided to rename all of the athletes and dump the name "Vols" because (ostensibly) some recruit didn't understand what it meant, past athletes would be upset, fans would be upset, and I'd be battling to keep the name.

Your poor taste has been duly noted.

The color orange is a temporary thing to appease the diehards and then the school will update its colors. Not to upset anybody, but the color orange is pretty terrible looking. How old is it--100 or more years? It looks like a very old color.

The TN legislature had no business taking up the matter in the first place.

What part of a state university isn't the state legislature's business?

I am reminded of the oft stated line by fans complaining about Pro Sports owners "interfering" in the running of the team. S/he's the owner. It's interference when somebody else meddles in the running of the team.

Anyway, clearly to me the issue of the Lady Vol name should be low on the agenda of items to be considered by the legislature - but anything concerning a school that receives appropriations from the state budget is the business of the legislature. IMO.

A patch? Really? How nice.

I know sly,it actually doesn't fix the problem, that Hart and Company don't care what the players and fans think

Nobody owns the university per se, certainly not the general assembly, so your pro sports example falls flat. The BoT with the inclusion of the governor and 5 state department heads as ex-officios ultimately governs UT.
The UTAD is self-supporting and doesn't rely on or receive state appropriations.

The example was accurate... The owner can't meddle, he owns it. The legislature can't meddle, they're responsible for appropriations. And when UT Academics transfers money to UT Athletics to cover debts the AD is legally obligated to pay, the legislature had better make it their business to know why public money is being used to support a self-supporting organization.

This is some what far afield from the lady vol naming issue, but your statement that the legislature has no business getting involved in the affairs of a public university is in error.
