Lady Vols Were Outstanding

I agree with the postive assessment of the LVs performance. While they did have better athletes, the LVs have not done well against Missouri in the past and teams like Virginia Tech which have a similar type of players and style of play.

The LVs did a great job in chasing Mizzou off the 3-pt line. While they gave up some easy lay-ups in the first half, they also shut that down for the most part in the 2nd half. So, good adjustments from the staff.

And the LVs put up decent offensive numbers with Diamond and Bashaara having just okay nights. The LVs got some three point shooting from different players (including Carter) and Russell showed a nice turn around jump shot. Diamond's defensive play is definitely getting better game by game.

The LVs press worked better than it had in previous games as well. Still evident were some of the not so great aspects of LV's half-court sets (too stagnant, making forced passes, Tea driving into traffic and not dishing, etc.) but in the 2nd half, they actually ran some decent half court plays.

It is quite the turnaround from the debacle at Stanford. Hopefully, they keep tracking in this positive direction.

I thought we did a great job for once of running them off the three point line. They got a little frustrated at their inability to get wide open and quick shot a few in the first half. They were able to get some open looks in the second half still couldn't make any. 2 for 21 they could never beat the Lady Vols with that one stat.
Going forward with teams that have the shooters this should be the game plan to run them off the line make them drive it or take a mid-range never let them have an open three.
The point being I'd rather give up ten layups then 10 threes as you are plus ten in points. Second three point shooters can never make layups consistently and we saw that last night.
Va. Tech got to many open looks wish we could play them again with the defense we played last night.

I have a question. Does Warlick have the team in full court press mode most of the time?

I've only been able to catch one Tennessee game this year - don't remember who the opponent was - and when the LV's used the press, it seemed effective. And according to the ESPN write-up of last night's game, a lot of the credit for the outcome was given to using the press.

If Warlick doesn't use the press all the time, should she?

UT shoots 41.5 percent from the floor--and 23 percent from three-point line
UCONN shoots 56 percent from the floor--and 36 percent from three-point line

UT is averaging 14 assists per game (surprisingly high)
UConn is averaging 22 assists per game (astoundingly high)

Those numbers explain why UConn dominates women's basketball and we are eating its dust. The more we can close the yawning offensive efficiency gap between us and the huskies, the closer we will get to being a real contender and not a pretender. In the end our defense should be good enough; it's the offense that will determine how far this team goes, Warlick's views notwithstanding.

No, it's only used part of the time. It's much less effective against teams with better guards. Missouri's guards were pretty inept last night.

I thought we did what we were supposed to do. The 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters looked like the Lady Vols that we have come to love. My thoughts:

1. The bench needs to get 'more complete.' It was clear we slipped when the bench came in last night.
Dunbar = has to improve defensively in the post. It's a matter of getting to a final four or not. if she is going to do this "4" thing. She missed a rebound and fouled the player to get an 'and-one'. USC will eat her alive in the post. It's just a matter of boxing out.
Cooper = I saw more good in her last night than bad. I recall 2 times last night she received an outlet pass and took it down the floor and started to attack the rim with 3 defenders on her, and she dribbled the ball out and started the offense. What she is learning is, in high school she could dribble into 5 players and still score, she is starting to learn, she can't do that in Division I. I have a feeling she will be a settled PG by SEC tourney time. What I'm most afraid of is she could follow in the footsteps of Reynolds.
Middleton = difference maker hands down for the bench.
Reynolds = okay game for her. She was very vocal on the floor when she was in. I think coming off the bench is good for her at this time. Glad to see her rebound!

2. Free throw shooting
I was so happy to see us get to the line finally and be aggressive

3. Assists/Rebounds
Big indicator that we are not where we still need to be.
8 Assist, 13 To's.
Rebound margin +3

Quality win (by the margin) if we played this game a month ago, I think we would of lost, we are not the same team we were a month ago. I'm pleased with the results, still work to be done. Here's to forward progress! :good!:

Reynolds defense in the post is better than Dunbar.

Or not let them shoot 56% and 36% from the floor, and or force them to one on one team, defense, rebounds and good guard play win championships. Like Uconn don't play good defense, which often gets overlooked. Uconn defense is usually solid too.

That might have been true in the past but I'm not so sure about this edition. They took it to the hoop and had some success plus they went in the paint and created a lot of opportunities but just missed some shots. Their go-to shot may still be the 3 pointer but they are not as one dimensional this year from what I have seen. I think this was a better win that some would have us believe and I'll take a win every day of the week no matter who we play.

That's because we were focused on defending the three so we opened our defense up. We knew we could limit their inside points too with Graves and Russell. Missouri runs no screens to get their threes open.

They should take a break from practicing defense and practice lay ups and free throws

I agree, we had to miss at least 12 points by missing easy lay ups. Russell made some tough shots and missed a couple of easy lay up and she was not the only. I say Double D miss two easy ones. From what I say we either rushed our shot or were too leisure.

They set screens. They screened the entire team off several times to get Michealis a shot. It was kind of pretty.

Really, the biggest factor in this game was the Missouri coaches decision to play man defense most of the game. I respect that, but I think she made a bad decision.

Their not as close to the rim because of elevation and the ball is smaller. Not sure the ball has anything to do with it. But it's something that will always be an issue in the women's game. Yet most females shoot the free throw ridiculously better.

Hard to make an "easy" layup when you are being grabbed from behind by two hands(Nared) or knocked into by two girls (DD) on the try.

We actually finished well at the free throw line. We were terrible in the first half but finished the game 22 for 32. That's pretty decent. It's hard to lose a game when you get 22 points from the line--nearly a third of our point total.

Mizzou had 14 offensive rebounds, 15 second chance points, and 36 points in the paint. Mizzou outdid the LV's in offensive rebounds and points in the paint. Your eyes didn't really deceive you - they were more effective inside than they were outside.

Regarding the attitude - Mizzou was needlessly physical. The game was rougher than it needed to be. I'm not sure what was behind all the elbows, hip checks, and yapping they did.

They are a dirty team, coached to play dirty. It helps level the court...look at the replay of the dual technical. Ultimate result: Alexa fouled out before end of game. (I know, Alexa needs to be smarter in that situation; easy for me to say:p; I didn't have a thug Mizzery player on me...she did.) I've watched Mizzery play in prior years. My opinion of them has not changed...and it is very low.

For some weird reason, it is more difficult for women to hit easy lay ups than it is for the men.
Have you been watching many of the men's games? They blow lay ups and dunks like crazy!! I watch a lot of men's basketball. So I beg to differ.

Missouri is where that girl kept her hands all over Izzy and when she had took enough and got back at her both got suspended. I'm thinking it was the #24. Poor Nia got suspended too for running onto the floor when really it was Cierra. Mo is a rough team. If the refs make the girls tuck their shirts in Sopie shouldn't be able to tuck her shorts legs up.

I usually get it when people have a hard time getting names of our Lady Vols spelled correctly (Ciria for Cierra), but I have absolutely no idea what the bolded sentence is supposed to mean!
