Lane Kiffin was on Bruce Murray's show on Mad Dog radio last Thursday, as part of a four day media tour. Bruce mostly lofted softball questions and didn't follow up on any of Lane's answers. Here are the highlights of what I heard (would have posted that day but just now got computer access):

- Lane sounds like he has marbles in his mouth when he speaks.
- Lane said he doesn't consider his staff accountable for any of the USC sanctions, even though many occurred when he was on the staff, because neither he nor any of his current staff were identified by name in the NCAA report.
- He said he sacrificed personal reputation by the things he said while coaching at Tennessee in order to bring much needed attention to the program (I am so glad he made this personal sacrifice for the good of our program). He went on to say that he doesn't need to do that at USC because their reputation brings the right players to the school.
- He said he's learned to answer questions better
- He said he got a few death threats and had police protection during the last days at Tennessee, but that he considered that the result of just a few misguided (my word, not his) fans
- He sees playing the Pac-12 championship game at a home site as a 50-50 proposition. He likes that it will mean a sellout, but he doesn't like that it could mean the championship is decided in bad weather in the north (Washington, Oregon).

I agree with him on most of that.

You seem to imply that the death threats were not the result of fans that were "misguided".

I didn't mean to imply that. I forgot the exact word he used to define this type of fan, so I inserted "misguided" to make it clear he didn't consider those few the majority of the normal fan base.

My mistake, I misread your parentheses.

True, in a sense, but that tends to imply that his reputation was the only one affected.

Sometimes I think he uses the whole I put my foot in my mouth to generate buzz as a cover up for making bad PR decisions.

He still pisses me off. Who in the hell does he think we are? Vanderbilt?

True.

I don't see how pissing off the town of Pahokee generated any good PR.

He called out Myer because Kiffin was ignorant of the rules.

Getting a public reprimand from the SEC didn't bring a lot of positive feelings.

I think he was more concerned about generating buzz for himself than the school. :twocents:
He said he sacrificed personal reputation by the things he said while coaching at Tennessee

What reputation?

He catered to his current reputation. Al Davis agrees with me. (hard to use as proof)

When we hired him he said something about USC not being on any of the final lists of big time players and UT being on all of them around the time he was a player. Said he wanted to make it that way again.

Kiffin said that?

He inherited a team that lost to Wyoming. So at the time, yeah we pretty much were. Actually, it was worse. Vanderbilt actually went to a bowl game in 2008.

He said the exact same thing when he was coaching at Tennessee, but no one had a problem with. I'm not saying he was wrong or right, but he did.

You actually think a program that's mustered one win in 28 tries was on par with UT? Remind me of the score between us that year, at Dud Field.

So you are saying he had to put his foot in his mouth on several occasions to help us get off of Vandy status?

Do you have some sort of alert setup so that everytime there is a thread about Kiffin you have to go take a poop in it? Geez...

Are you seriously arguing that there wasn't a problem with how UT was perceived by elite recruits at the time Kiffin was hired?

Where did this come from? I thought they were talking about us being equal to Vandy ...

And yea, it's pretty obvious Lane hurt UTs rep more than he helped it. Not even close.

Lane said he was sacrificing his personal reputation for Tennessee while he was coach here? Link? Not saying you're wrong, nothing would surprise me.
