Last Coach to Beat Gators

In the last 8 years after we've lost to the Gators for 2 weeks I won't watch any sports at all, Im so soul sick from the loss I avoid any sports at all. But this season was different for some reason, I was dissapointed at the loss, but I expected it. I recorded the game on dvr and went to sleep(I work nights)just in case of a miracle. I awoke and checked the ESPN bottom line and sure enough....31-17.....I then erased the game from the dvr and began watching game highlights. Meditating on this i'm not sure how to label this other than the fight is gone out of me and I fully expect us to lose to Florida even if we had the roster of the Denver Broncos. Next year with coach Jones settled in more and his recruited players start getting playing time hopefully things will change, and every season after that improving. Usually right now I'm so down and angry at this time , weird how I'm indifferent about the loss.

2004 was Fulmer's last good coaching job. The 07 team that made it to Atlanta is regularly referenced by the Fulmerites. But 07 wasn't actually that good of a year. Lost to Cal by 14, Florida by 39 and Alabama by 24, yet somehow backed into the SEC title game.

It was a good year, it kept UGA out of the NC. Had we missed those fg's or had vandy not miss theirs, UGA plays LSU in SECC and plays for NC. Heck, they almost played in it without playing in SECC, ala bama in 2011.

I'm not defending Fulmer, but didn't he beat Florida 5 times including the 92 game where he was filling in for Majors? 92, 98, 01, 03 and 04. But he lost to Florida in 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 99, 00, 02, 05, 06, 07, and 08.

Periodically the Fulmerites pop out and attempt to re-write history. They throw out the accomplishments of the late 90s as proof that the university shouldn't have removed him. They usually omit the fact that he had 2 losing seasons in his last 4 years, and when you have 2 losing seasons in 4 years you get fired at places like Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Texas, USC, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, etc.

I defend Fulmer to the bitter end, do not think because of that, I do not support Butch...I know 08 was bad, but the year before the came within a eyelash of winning the SEC, that is a fact. That was the last TN game I have been able to attend. They win that gameFulmer leaves on his own terms. I bet TN would have had no less then 9 wins twice in the last 4 years, is that good or bad? Well it is better then what we did have, the whole problem is we never upgraded, that includes Kiffin. I support Butch, but I sure as "heck" did not support Dooley.

This is where I am as well. We ALWAYS make UF look better than they actually are. If I could change one thing about college football, it would be that UT and UF play in November instead of at the beginning of the season which normally casts a negative shadow over the rest of the season. I remember the Fulmer days of "We're not in control of our own destiny" or "We're going to need a little help". For example, switch the Missouri game and Florida game.

Well let's throw out the "accomplishments" of his replacements.

I know it doesn't mean much but the game that sticks in my mind is the last game Spurrier coached against us as a gator..For some reason I was happy to send that guy off into the sunset...little did I realize at the time

The Fulmerites just won't die out.

Fact: UT almost beat LSU in the 2007 SEC title game.

Fact: UT backed into the 2007 SEC title game after getting their rears handed to them by Florida and Alabama.

Fact: Fulmer had 2 losing seasons in 4 years.

Fact: Having 2 losing seasons in 4 years gets you fired at places like Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Texas, USC, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, etc.

Fact: Fulmer was owned by the top tier coaches in the SEC (Spurrier, Meyer, Saban).

Fact: UT would've won more games with Fulmer from 2009-2012 than Kiffin/Dooley did.

Fact: From 2009-2012 UT would've continued to get beat every year by Florida and Alabama, and would have lost most years to South Carolina and Georgia during that time frame.

Fact: Fulmer will never be the coach at Tennessee again.

I supported removing Fulmer in 08. Still think it was the right move. I do believe the program would've won more games in the four years since his removal had he not been removed, but UT would've continued down the path of irrelevance by losing to anyone with equal or better talent. So the 23-27 record from 09-12 would probably be flipped to 27-23 with Fulmer at the helm.

That is correct. Well, at least until those universities realize how much damage they do to their programs when they fire a championship coach after 2 off years and then spend the better part of a decade as bottom feeders.

Why are all the Fulmer haters blind to the fact we have been riding the sewage pipe since we fired him?

What do you do when you have the last 4 years we have had? Play coaching carousel? Beg guys to coach us because so many turn it down? When somebody finally accepts say "he gets it" even though we continue to lose & show no improvement?

Right now Florida is a thorn in our side and that is what every program has (thorn in side = rivalries)...this is what college football is about

My best recommendation is to get behind Coach Jones and ride it out. If nothing changes then realize we as fans demanded a new coach, and we got it. Several of them as a matter of fact.

I think we have shown improvement...coaching carousel will destroy any program

I haven't seen any improvement. Maybe a slight defense improvement but as bad as we were last year it's hard to get worse. When you lose 9 in a row to a team it's hard to call it a rivalry.

This is some research I did last week to prove that Fulmer tallied his wins against subpar competition. As the tables state, they show teams' final records for their respective seasons and are compiled in either the section for his wins or the section for his losses.

So? He was still a better coach than Kiffin and Dooley. Also regardless of the stats, he only had 2 losing seasons in 16 years and they were not consecutive. Hate all you want, but we should have kept him until we got Butch. He would have done a lot better.

BTW...did anyone see the "coaching carousel" that the Raiders have been on on MNF tonight? We are the Oakland of the SEC without the thugs (if Kiffin were here we would still be thugs):)

No doubt Fulmer was greater but where does the blame lie? Further up I guess?

What is wrong with missing Fulmer? I doubt anyone would take the past four years in exchange for what Fulmer would have done even if it would be mediocre. Hoping Butch gets it done.
