I had a college buddy whose mom ran a Baptist mission down in Mississippi. Whenever she sent him money he would blow it in a few days, so she started sending him food stamps frm the mission instead. We called them "gift certificates".

You really need to back off of Joe Sushi Pack. Quit being a condescending elitist, you don't understand his plight.

First, that's ridiculous!

Seconds, of course I have to point out that Obama did not start the food stamp program and I doubt you can tell me whether any change to it by his administration made any difference in this scenario.

no obama didn't start it and these abuses well predate him, BUT obama has clearly stated he wants these programs extended and therefore i must assume he is ok with this.

Come on, no way would anyone ever be "ok" with using food stamps for such pricey stuff.

Seriously. Be realistic about this.

i am. every study has shown that the only thing that actually works is food banks. any sort of food stamps or rebates get abused. obama wants to EXPAND things that clearly don't work.

It's not as widespread as you would think.

buying sushi with food stamps? probably not. selling food stamps to your neighbor at .60 on the dollar and then buying drugs with the cash? happens every day. the ones in california don't require an id of any sort to use.

What is not as widespread and how widespread do you think he thinks it is? And how do you know it is not as bad as he thinks?

Most people I see/know that have food stamps just get the essentials; bread, peanut butter, cheese, Kool-Aid, the basics. I have yet to see a case of some ******* getting a bottle of wine or some MD 20/20, although I'm sure it happens.

I used to work at a grocery store in high school. The stuff people bought with food stamps was pretty eye opening. First of all, they usually bought garbage food (chips, coke, little debbies) instead of healthy food. But what really pissed me off was when they bought boatloads of steaks. I was pretty poor growing up and we only had steaks that were reduced in price, you know, the ones that have a bluish tint because they're close to the expiration. I'll never understand why my folks who worked so hard, could barely made ends meet, while others got handouts for doing nothing. I'm sure my folks qualified for food stamps, but they had too much pride to take them. Times are definitely changing.

Most people you see are are not the same people droski will see. Plus I did not think you could buy alcohol or tobacco with them, not directly anyway.

I've seen some pretty crappy stuff in Memphis. People using food stamps, that couldn't speak English, at an upscale grocery store (Schnuck's).

Sidebar, but wasn't it ridiculous that they started giving them credit cards instead of actual food stamps, so they wouldn't feel embaressed using them? Wasn't that ridiculous?
