The problem is simple: the cost of any sort of monitoring or policing of what they are used for would far outwiegh the savings on those occassions where someone tried to buy something either not permitted or so extravagant that it is obviously an abuse.

Sidebar, but wasn't it ridiculous that they started giving them credit cards instead of actual food stamps, so they wouldn't feel embaressed using them? Wasn't that ridiculous?

fine give em cards. who cares. just put their friggin name on it so they actually have to use it.

I used to work at a grocery store in high school. The stuff people bought with food stamps was pretty eye opening. First of all, they usually bought garbage food (chips, coke, little debbies) instead of healthy food. But what really pissed me off was when they bought boatloads of steaks. I was pretty poor growing up and we only had steaks that were reduced in price, you know, the ones that have a bluish tint because they're close to the expiration. I'll never understand why my folks who worked so hard, could barely made ends meet, while others got handouts for doing nothing. I'm sure my folks qualified for food stamps, but they had too much pride to take them. Times are definitely changing.

There was a time when there was pride in living off what you made and being self reliant. Sadly most of those people are gone and the prevailing mindset today is everyone else is doing so i might as well get my share.

There comes a time when you have to put your pride aside and accept help if it means your kids go without food and I don't know anyone who would hold that against any honest hard working family or those who simply cannot work. The sad fact is there are many who could do with less, cut out some unnecessary expenses, but choose not to and take when they could get by without something else and feed their family. This entitlement mentality chaps my arse.

Case in point my father makes pretty good money and has the means to help us kids out if need be. My stepbrothers and sister take advantage of this. My stepmother gave my stepbrother and his girlfriend/babies momma a large chunk of money ($2,000.00) to help them make some of their expense payments (they were behind). They are on public assistance and this gift came to them less than a month after they decided they both needed systems put in their cars that easily cost them a combined $3,000.00

I visited my father and stepmother a few weeks later with my wife and daughter and as we were leaving she said to me "I always try to do the same for all the kids so I want you to have this (she tried to hand me $1,000.00 in cash), I told her I really appreciate the gesture. I told her we didn't want to take the money because we really didn't need it. Sure there are times when we have had to buy really cheap food (ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, hotdogs) to eat for that week but we cut expenses to get by. I told her if that we were in dire straights, couldn't make the house payment, utilities etc. If we ever asked for help she would be sure that we needed it.

that's why i am for completely eliminating the program. give food directly to people in need. no more of this food stamp bs.

Maybe they should run food stamps like the WIC (Women Infants Children) program. It didn't seem to get abused. A mother gets a ration of formula, diapers, generic juice, etc. The children's basic needs are met and there isn't an opportunity to buy extravagent items becuase they have to be WIC approved.

this was at pavilions which is a very high end california super market. good to see my tax dollars at work. all hail obama!

Do they still use food stamps in California? I thought they had switched everyone over to the credit card in which case no one would know they were paying with food stamps.

They should only allow certain items to be paid for by food stamps if they're going to continue with them. I think it should only allow healthy food, water, milk or baby needs such as food and diapers but nothing else. There is no reason why someone should be buying Mountain Dew or a bag of Fritos with food stamps.

I see. Also, what food, would this program be giving out? The essentials I take it?

fresh and canned vegtables, eggs, dairy, meats. your local food bank is already doing this. and it works. now i supposed it could be argued someone might sell that food and buy booze and drugs, but that's a lot bigger pain in the arse than those who are getting these credit cards in the mail.

If somebody is in a dire situation and legitimately needs temporary help, I don't have a problem with this. The problem is it becomes a lifestyle and people get used to it.

There needs to be more incentive to get off this government program stuff.

They have every right to have sushi. Same as you and I.

Just because they're less fortunate financially doesn't mean they shouldn't enjoy all the same things. We're all equals here, droski.

That's the hard part, what's the incentive? The only one I can think of is that the user would get cut off at some point. They should also drug test these people randomly too.

Wrong. We're paying for it therfore we should decide what they have.

Can I borrow some money as I'm hungry and need to go get a steak at Ruth's Chris?

That would be an improvement. WIC is a much better program, in that you KNOW they are at least purchasing what they are supposed to be with the funds.

TN inroduced a bill for just that. They also want to limit lottery winnings for those on assistance to $600. I like both ideas

Sure. It'd be my pleasure. Remember to also get a nice wine. They're great for antioxidants. We don't want you unhealthy.

As you all know, the social care system is just there to keep the less fortunate down, and this has to change.

I worked at Bi-Lo in high school, and I can attest (at least at the store I worked at) the cashier would get in a lot of trouble if they tried to override the system to allow for non-WIC products to be purchased.

Only the foods that droski mentioned were covered. At least back then.
