...that Tennessee played with a ton of effort but hadn't gelled yet.

Bilas said they hustled and played with heart, but he criticized their decision-making -- JP's 3 in OT, going for steals instead of playing man-up, and mostly, not going on top of screens set on them in the perimeter, allowing Gonzaga approximately 793 open looks from 3 pt range.

The play-by-play guy (was it dan shulman?) had one quote in the second half that summed it up: "they're flying all over the place on defense right now. they may not know where they're supposed to be, but they're going all out."

The number of "dumb" mistakes far outweighed the number of "lazy" mistakes last night.

I still stand by my assessment that this team's problems have more to do with what's between their ears than what's in their hearts.

I can flop and dive for balls that I have no chance at all day long and appear to hustle.

I repeatedly saw our guys not get back on defense after made baskets because they were whining to the ref or pounding their chest after a good play.

You're right too though. They don't do the more complex things well and they don't do the simple things well either.

One of my favorite lines was when one of the announcers, I think Bilas, said we looked like we didn't know where we supposed to be on defense, but by flying around, we were at least being disruptive.

But, I got very annoyed when they wouldn't stop saying the refs blew it by not calling goaltending. I don't care what the rule says. It was the final seconds of a tied game, and the ball had NO chance of going in.

Bilas was being nice because he's supposed to. I guarantee you he would say something different off air.

Yeah, that was pissing me off. You always swallow your whistle right there in a tie game... especially when the guy airballed it and the fact that Tyler's hand was nearly out of the net when the ball just crossed the cylinder of the rim.

Definitely. You could tell he wanted to rip into us so much worse... he is one of the few to get to see us twice, so he actually realized that the game wasn't a good offensive showing by Gonzaga and that they got their "mojo" back - but another horrible defensive effort by us.

Is he doing our game against UK on super Tuesday as well?

yeah,
it was horrible D....which we have witnessed almost all season.
Heart only takes you so far.
eventually you have to learn to play the game, be where you are supposed to be and WHY you need to be there.

Bilas is one of the only guys who tells it like he sees it.

In so many ways, he repeatedly said that Tennessee hadn't learned how to defend against a screen. Off air, this would translate into, "Do they have any clue what they're doing?"

but his talk of all our hustle was overblown. They essentially got out the point with the comment about how much better we defend after a made basket. That was a swat at our effort without really saying that we don't give it.

Anyone that couldn't tell Bilas was struggling to keep himself in check watching Tennessee has problems in between their ears. He was clearly doing everything he could to find a compliment to Tennessee and give it to them. They were all generic and at least to me it seemed he was disgusted by their sloppy D and horrible shot choices. I got two texts from non UT buddy (one not even an SEC guy) talking about how Bilas was struggling to talk good about Tennessee.

If we were up by 40 Billas would still have problems talking good about Tennesseee

yeah, while he doesn't trash any other school, he wants nothing more than to bash Tennessee. He works for ESPN, so obviously he's biased. Great logic there.

The only time Bilas "tells it like he sees it" is when it gives him a chance to attack a coach he doesn't like. He's the guy who spent three years talking about how "close" Buzz Peterson was to having UT in SEC contention. I would have loved to have Doug Gottleib doing the game last night. Then, the truth would have been told.

He did say some interesting stuff tho that is true.

He said that He believes that By the end of the season, he still sees us at the Top of the SEC, and being much improved, because our team chemistry is just not there yet. he has said both times he's watched us play that he expects us to improve greatly by the end of the year..

which i would love it if that came true..
it would set up for a DYNAMIC 09-10 team with too much talent that any other SEC team would wanna mess with

I could do without all the chest pounding and posing after every made shot. It really looks bush league.

When our team goes on a run, they like to jump and chest-bump each other on the way to the huddle after the opponent calls a timeout. Is it just me, or does the opponent always immediately go on some kind of run after that? I have felt that way since Bruce's first year.

I'm not trying to suck the fun out of the game. I just want to win. I'd have no problem with the chest-bumping if I didn't feel like things were about to go bad for us every time I see it.
