It seem they were under the same circumstances. We expected more from Phil and we expected more from Butch. Are we asking too much ?

Expecting an immediate turnaround after everything that has went down in the last few years? Yes asking way too much.

Don't mean to group everyone into one stereotype because I know there are logical people here, but seems a lot were expecting world beaters this year and the fact we have struggled means CBJ and staff are instant failures here.

Could Phil turn it around

I think he would have and I'm sure others feel the same way,I forgot who said it,but didn't he have a hell of a recruiting class coming in ? water under the bridge though

I did think the Vols were a 6 win team this year, for some reason at one time,I did think they would do a hell of a lot better than that

Butch isn't responsible for the talent level. Fulmer was (responsible for the talent he had when he went 5-7)
Fulmer peaked in 1998 and Volnation will always be thankful.
He also managed to loose to Memphis with Manning at QB.

I was hoping for 6 expecting 5. I do not know if Fulmer could've turned it around, but I would like to think he would've. Maybe with a little kick in the behind to get him going again.

We Garnered a lot of recruits from Georgia which helped too.
I respect what Fulmer did, but he was not effective without Garner and Cutcliff at his side.

I like Butch because he has a blue collar appeal like Fulmer and a loyalty to his staff like Fulmer which will keep our program stable. But Butch has that added passion and drive like Pearl has. Butch is a great combination of Fulmer and Pearl - 2 UT greats.

I said this in an earlier thread, but it is refreshing to see that some have not given up on this staff after a disappointing season.

fulmer won lots of games in the SEC and our expectations were high which is right.

Butch won elsewhere and hence the high expectations. SEC is totally different level and Butch will get accustomed to it and start winning. Well I hope :)

Time to stop parroting Obama. The blame for today is no longer on Fulmer. This line of BS is getting real old.

So we fired him to have 4 years of steady deterioration. We done good.

Fulmer did win lots of SEC games, however, the SEC of Fulmers glory days is not the same SEC it is today. During many if those years the SEC was TN , Fl, then everyone else. The west division was terrible.

Spurrier owned Fulmer, when the othe schools started upgrading their coaching staffs Fulmer did not flare well against them. Fulmer was losing to Saban, Miles, Richt and Spurrier. Why do you believe he could now compete with these coaches now? I give Fulmer praise for his success at TN but I do think it was time for him to leave. He stated hinself he considered leaving after the NC and again after the 2001 season. He should have left after 2001. It is easy to see that is when the Vols started their slide fron greatness to mediocrity. The downfall under Fulmer, then 2 bad hires by Hamiliton is why we are where we are. That is taking a realistic look at the program

Fulmer has been here since 2008 at least! We can't keep blaming him. And yes we've been SOL ever since. We've had Kiffin who destroyed everything he has touched and ran off good recruits (Tadj Boyd anyone) then Dooley (who recruited poor, PO high school head coaches and good recruits, and allowed his players to skip workouts in the freaking SEC the hardest most physically demanding football conference in America and we wonder why we looked slow and fatigued) Now we have Butch and it seems like we might be slowly turning the corner if what the players are saying what is happening is true, but his team also plays like a worse version of Dooley's in some cases. I'm hoping next year is more like Fulmer's first in 1993 and that Butch can coach, scheme and outsmart and out enthuse everyone else in the SEC.

Yes. Fulmer should still be here but I like Butch.

No way in hell Fulmer should still be here. Just because the wrong hires were made after he stepped down doesnt mean it wasnt time for him to go. Not bashing Phil at all but his time was up.

I hope that happens but I do not see it. Butch is having to rebuild a program where Fulmer took over an elite program loaded with talent and yes as an assistant coach under Coach Majors, Fulmer was heavily involved in bringing in that elite talent.

I think it will will be 2015-2016 bwfore Butch can start competing with the SEC powerhouses.

There is another thread "Fulmer Debate" were this dead horse is being beaten everyday. Should this not be merged. Flame away.

The downfall of the program was not Fulmer, it was 2 bad hires in a row after him. You can recover quickly from one, but 2 will set you back for almost a decade.
