What's "fearmongering" about it? Nearly 2/3 usage of ICU beds is not an insignificant number. While you're right about the lack of specificity in the numbers, and the real question is "what % of Covid patients are hospitalized in inpatient beds as opposed to ICU?", the six states whose ICU beds are at 70% capacity all rank in the bottom half of the country in percentage of their populations vaccinated, with the lone exception of Rhode Island which has less than 100 ICU beds in the entire state. You can start a pissing contest over what qualifies as "a strain," but the numbers are what they are.

Found this data - as of July 24th we were just under 8K total compared to a peak of 29K in January. While the trend it up; the numbers are still low. For reference there are about 75K ICU beds in the US (so just over 10% of ICU beds are occupied with Covid patients currently).

Other than the fact that the numbers are climbing, that's great. But, again, compare that with the disbursement back in the winter. ICU bed usage was way up in pretty much every state except for a few sparsely populated states like Idaho and Wyoming. Now the states inching toward capacity are all states with lower vaccination rates. The previous problem states like NY and NJ are hanging out around the national average.

What's the normal national average for icu bed usage? Hospitals are businesses they dont stay open by having huge excesses of open beds, ICU or otherwise.

inching toward capacity? The highest in the CDC numbers that were linked in an earlier post is Georgia at 80%; given 65-70% is normal capacity it seems the ICU crisis is being overblown.
