Schaeffer update: Quarterback Brent Schaeffer told Florida recruiting analyst Larry Blustein that he will wait until after spring practice before deciding whether to transfer.

Blustein, who covers recruiting for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, talked with Schaeffer last week at practice for the Broward-Dade All-Star Game. Schaeffer said he didn't come to Tennessee to sit on the bench.

So you mean he is not transferring to Bama???

I'm really trying to give Brent the benefit of the doubt, but he's not exactly endearing himself by saying things like that. It's like he wants to be recruited all over again.

I have a feeling that if he keeps this up, some of the big citrus-colored group of pigskin fans in Tennessee will not want him around anymore.

If Ainge can come back from the injury, I can't believe that we'll go the Freshman route again especially with those 2 tough road trips to LSU and Florida coming so early.

And, like I said, would be a foolish thing to do to waste Ainge's talent because you want to jumpstart a freshman.

The starter next September will be either Ainge or Crompton.

I think it would be Ainge or Clauson before Crompton

Clausen did amazing in the bowl game which increases his chances of starting next year. Brent has so much running talent. I really wish he doesnt leave.

Here's my take.

2005
Ainge wins the starting role... just like he did this past season. Shaeffer transfers in frustration... just like he did 3 times in high school. Clausen is the solid backup... knowing he is still mentoring Ainge and also an injury away from starting. Crompton redshirts... knowing that he can learn the offense and still have 4 more years to play for the Big Orange. Jimmy Clausen is a junior in high school.

2006
Ainge is again the starter for the defending national champions. Red-shirt freshman Crompton is the backup... learning from a 3-year starter. Jimmy Clausen is a senior in high school

2007
Ainge opts for the NFL after winning back-to-back national championships. Crompton starts as a sophomore as Vols win 3rd straight national title. Jimmy Clausen either redshirts or is the primary backup as a true freshman.

2008
Crompton starts as a junior. Jimmy Clausen is either a redshirt freshman or true sophomore.

2009
Crompton opts for NFL draft after winning back-to-back national championships and Tennessee's 4th in-a-row. Jimmy Clausen is the starter.

those are bold predictions Allvol and as for next yr I agree 100% , mark it down folks ....Ainge wins starting position, Clausen #2 working on his coaching career, Crompton redshirts and Shaeffer transfers somewhere and probably bad mouthing UT to all the media as he leaves.

I'll save future predictions till after next season, Jimmy ain't here yet

no blame here either, just doesn't seem to be the type to ride the pine for long before scooting to greener pastures

I thing that if Schaeffer wants to start, then he better "start" doing something other than threatening to leave. He could "start" by going to class. He could "start" by not going to clubs at 4 in the morning. He could "start" by going to work out like the rest of the team does.

i don't think he's matured to that point yet and thats why he will not win the job at UT

I will be very pissed if schaeffer leaves. Such great talent just not used in the right ways. If he worked his arse of and showed fulmer what he can do and the rest of the Vol Fans, we would have somthing goin here. But if he leaves, hes gonna be missin out on the greatest team ever.

He doesn't have long to iron out the work ethics and committment, in all areas of being a UT athlete. Ah..la J.Banks. Not to draw close similarities, but lack of committment from thinking you don't have to to be great is what got JB circling in and out of trouble. Commit to class, commit to character and discipline, and commit to work and study of the offense and team as a whole, and he can lock him self in for a good share of playing time. Without that type of commitment, PM and CC would not be 1 and 2 on all UT QB stats.

Schaeffer just needs to decide what is best for him and commit to it and quit talking about it. I guess in a way, delaying his decision until after Spring practice shows that at least he's going to put up a fight.

There is a very very low possibility he will get the starting position, even if he trains hard, IMO. The only way we could fit him in is with a complete overhaul of the Tennessee offensive scheme. And in college, you HAVE to stick to fundamentals. Ainge allows for that kind of play, Schaeffer does not. Unless he can start treating other SEC schools like he did UNLV, he is done at Tennessee.

Brent needs to take a page out of Gerald's playbook. Gerald did a complete 180 and is now a great leader for this young team. Hang in there; work hard and things will work out for the best, except if your C.J. Leak.

Does everyone remember the guy who thought he should start instead of Peyton Manning? My point exactly. Good Riddance Shaeffer if that's your choice

It's an interesting issue. Brent should do what is best for himself and if he doesn't feel that he fits at UT then more power to him and good luck. On the otherhand, he is part of a team and at times that means putting yourself second.

I can't judge Brent based on the little we know. Regardless of what he decides and ultimately does, I hope he learns from the experience and grows as person - afterall, that's what college is all about.

Finally, I agree that he should not be talking about it so much - especially saying specifically that transfer is a real possibility. On the other hand, when the media is hounding you everyday asking if you're going to transfer - you gotta say something. Kinda like when there's a rumor a coach is leaving. Pretty much anything the coach says (if he is considering leaving) is wrong. Deny it and leave and you are a liar, betrayer, etc. Admit you are looking and people freak out.
