Legit Case for UT #2 Final Poll

I’m just glad it’s expanding to a 12 team playoff...eventually. For a sport that should be decided on the field, the ranking committees have had too much say.

I mean, it doesn't reall matter. No one cares who finishes #2. That's like when John Cooper's Buckeyes lost in the 1998 Big 10 title game, which let FSU sneak into the title game against Tennessee, and Cooper wasted weeks telling everyone in the media "well we BETTER be number 2!" Which they did, of course, but no one remembers. Or cares.

We won the Orange Bowl. We finished on a high note. That's what people will remember. Where we're ranked afterward isn't going to matter to anyone.

Reese Bobby was (more or less) right. "If you ain't first, you're last."

UT, Michigan, Bama, and OSU should be 2-5. I don't think there's a clear order..

This. You can make a legit case for UT, Bama, Ohio State, and Michigan at #2.

I don't know that I'd put TCU at #9 (though that is where Sagarin put them), but I'd probably have them at 6 or 7. Good team, but got lucky multiple times over the course of the season. It all finally caught up against Georgia where it was clear they were outmatched. Though, not going lie, I think teams like Utah, LSU, and Penn State would probably beat TCU on a neutral field.

Vanderbilt beat Florida, who beat South Carolina, who beat Tennessee (), who beat LSU, who beat Alabama, who beat Kansas State, who beat TCU, who beat Michigan, who beat Ohio State, who beat Penn State, who beat Utah who beat Washington. So they should be #2 by virtue of transitive wins over all teams ranked #2-#10 except Tulane.

The $1.69 question out there that remains is, can the Vols leap frog the Horned Toads in the final rankings? My wish is yes however, waiving off TCU would be an almost impossibility because it would make the folks who placed TCU in the Top 4 look ridiculous, and a man in my position cannot be made to look ridiculous..............................!

Who gives a $hit... rankings 2-10 will never be remembered by anyone.
#1 is all that matters... let's go win some championships in the next 5 years.
The UT AD is finally set up for success and I couldn't be more hopeful for the future of UT Sports.

If you're looking for something to blame, it's giving up 63 points in a loss to a mediocre South Carolina team, two weeks before the playoff selections.

That's it.

Final ranking could have us out of the top 25 and would mean just as much number 2.

technically our bowl win against Clemson should be better than Bama's win in their bowl

Its probably a toss up between Ohio State and Bama I agree but I think OSU is legit, they should have won the game against Georgia but the football gods deemed them unworthy at the last minute.

Agreed but I don’t trust them to put us too high.

We deserve the 2 or 3 spot but ESPN loves them some Big 10 and Alabama.

I think Tennesse, Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, and Washington will all be ahead of them. It was brutal to watch that.

Tennessee is the runner up in the final SEC conference rankings. The 2 loss Vols have the same conference record as Alabamer and hold the head to head match-up win over Alabamer. Also, one of the Vols losses was to the top team in the land on the road.

Also, take into account the Vols strength of schedule and beating all the top ranked teams they did along the way. Finishing off yet another top ranked conference champ in the Orange Bowl by 3 scores is just icing on the cake.

Of course, South Carolina will be mentioned. Okay, the Vols had a very bad day and performance agaisnt a team that literally hit the lottery that day and caught lightning in a bottle.

Right now, though, I believe one team is better than the Vols......

We likely would have lost to osu

Probably Bama. Then UT.

The top of the SEC is the cream and the Big10 is overrated, the playoffs have proven that time and again.

I'm yet to hear a reasonable argument why Alabama should be ranked ahead of Tennessee.

I’d say because they have a team run by a top 5 draft pick. Our team leader has a torn ACL. If he was healthy I would have UT at 2.
