I spent time during august camp watching the Tennessee staff several years back, and spoke at length with Chavis. I was incredibly impressed by him in every way--far more than any other coach on the field, I might say. He can coach. Would he be a good head coach? Can't say? It's an unpredictable business. I never thought Fulmer would be successful--a savvy but not terribly bright offensive lineman/offensive line coach. Chavis is a big-time Vol, and he is a leader--two nice qualities. We should have hired him before Dooley, that's for sure. I don't know that Chavis has ever burned to be head guy in the way that, say, Strong did.
