I'd take Chavis over Strong, Golden, Fedora, and the other lower tier coaches and WAAAAY before another bammer reject like Kirby Smart

Would be interesting. You know he would hire Phil in some capacity. I would be interested to see what he could do as far as hiring a staff. If it looked good, I could handle Chavis as HC.

He would have to hire 2-3 GREAT recruiter as he would just be the last visit, close the deal guy.

If you want the video to show up, the link in between [ youtube ] [ /youtube ] needs to be "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgvpADFLMTc"

You have to take off "&feature=youtu.be"

If we can't snag Gruden, bring chief home. Could hire him fairly cheap allowing plenty of money for a killer staff, and the man is all Vol! Only concern I have is recruiting. Is he really as lazy on the recruiting trail as we have heard over the years.

Does anyone wonder why Chavis has never been a head coach after all these years? I think there is a good reason. I like the Chief but there is no way I would settle for him as our head coach. Hopefully the folks who actually have a say would never consider it either.

Kind of similar to VT DC Bud Foster. He's had some good defenses (not lately) over the years, but never got a HC job. Maybe neither of them interview well.

Although John Chavis is probably the best DC in the country and he's been a DC for a long time, I do believe he has never been offered a HC job at a D1 school. I think he was a HC at somewhere like Alabama A&M before he was a DC at Tennessee. I think that is right! A HC job at Tennessee or anywhere like Tennessee might be biting off more than he can chew.

Sounds like miles might be trying to get rid of 3rd and chavis. Definitely cost them the bama game.

If Chavis brings in the right assistants, he could possibly do a great job as HC.

Hell screw it.. give chavis the job.. keep chaney.( sorry if my spelling is off, fat fingers and being slightly drunk). So the offense knows what they are doing..at least we will have a defense finally..

Chavis as HC/DC and keep the current offensive staff. The mans a winner and has Tennessee in his blood. We could do worse.

I spent time during august camp watching the Tennessee staff several years back, and spoke at length with Chavis. I was incredibly impressed by him in every way--far more than any other coach on the field, I might say. He can coach. Would he be a good head coach? Can't say? It's an unpredictable business. I never thought Fulmer would be successful--a savvy but not terribly bright offensive lineman/offensive line coach. Chavis is a big-time Vol, and he is a leader--two nice qualities. We should have hired him before Dooley, that's for sure. I don't know that Chavis has ever burned to be head guy in the way that, say, Strong did.
