Let’s Talk About Gainey

I've said it and will keep saying it, he's the key to us becoming just about unstoppable on offense. When he's hitting shots, driving the ball and scoring, we hit another gear on offense. Allows us to not drop off as much when DK is resting too. Solid game last 2 road performances.

Gainey had two really good games back-to- back, but he’s 2-11 these last two games. He looked a bit timid last night with his stroke. He obviously has the ability to be a major factor, but he’s not there yet. 1-2 games doesn’t qualify as breaking his slump, but if he can shoot better these next couple of games, maybe he will be closer to being who he would like to be.

He regressed and looked like a deer in the headlights when he got the ball, a passing turnover waiting to happen and his shot was terrible. He has looked like a totally different player the last few games last night included. They all looked good even Jonas kicked it up a notch.

Agree with all of this. Gainey "can" be a difference maker. We need pts off the bench each game and he can help us make a deep run for the conference championship as well as the NCAA tournament. Definitely an "X" factor. But during conference play he is averaging 27.3% FG and 29.2% 3 pt FG currently which isn't even close to what he should be capable of. Even last night, made a few big buckets but still shot poorly. We need him at 40% FG / 35% 3 pt FG every game minimum. We aren't going to be getting 26 from ZZ and JJJ every night and need a punch off the bench. Between Gainey, Awaka, Mashack, Estrella, now maybe Carr and maybe Dilione we need 20 pts per game to get to Final 4 level.

Gainey has had to transition into a new role. He was THE man at SC Upstate. Plays were drawn up for him, he was encouraged to take shots that wouldn't be good shots for his teammates. Now, he's a role player. Give him credit...he knew when he transferred he was going to go from being the man to a role player, but he transferred anyway. But it's still a transition and I think it took some time. He had to dispense of some old habits and adop a new mindset.

I think he's geting there now and is settling into his role. And it's a very valuable one.

Seems to be playing hard and becoming a scrappy player. Didn't see that early in the year. Seems to be playing within his role better.

It definitely looks like Gainey has regained some confidence. I like the way he's playing now. Just another piece of the puzzle fitting right in there.

Most underrated part of Gainey's game is his defense. Barnes has him on the floor for significant minutes not just for scoring, but how well he defends.
I feel like a lot of fans on the board don't see this for anyone but Mashack. While I think Mashack is the best at it, our defense as a team is pretty amazing.

That stretch he was in to provide some relief minutes was huge. Won't lie, I had no idea who he was throwing to at first on the lob to JJJ given how zoomed in the camera was, but he really played some tough D in those minutes he got.
The camera work was terrible in that game.

I don’t think he’s gotten enough credit.

He played some pretty good defense down the stretch and made some nice shots.

Also had a couple of nice rebounds as well.

Gainey is becoming a Vinny "Microwave" Johnson type scorer off the bench.

His defense is improving. He’s getting more minutes from Vescovi & Mashack. Vesco goes out at the first TO in both halves. Gainey replaces him instead of Mashack.

I think 10- 14 points from the bench is more realistic with the bench giving us strong defense and rebounding.

Individually or collectively? Either way, your expection is way off. Need way more collectively from the bench and expecting 10-14 from Gainey on the regular, is unrealistic.
Collectively. I don’t see us consistently getting 20 from our bench
