The U.S. Is Poised to Hit a New Oil Gusher - Kiplinger.com

We'll find out if the environmentalists/Western socialists will stop this or if the oil companies actually have a desire to keep supplies low to maintain the higher prices.

A new black gold rush is under way, this time in North Dakota.

The potential payoff is huge -- up to 100 billion barrels of oil. That’s twice the size of Alaska’s reserves and potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades.

Until now, the obstacles to production seemed overwhelming. The crude oil is locked away in rocks that are buried miles underground in the Bakken Play, a field that stretches into Montana and Saskatchewan, Canada.

I'd rather give the money to some Americans than some Saudi.

I'm sure the democrats and their socialist allies in the radical environmentalist movement will move swiftly to prevent any drilling in ND.

This is encouraging. However, if we don't build more refineries, this isn't going to do us a ton of good.

Which is why I made my comment about the oil companies. If they want to increase supply, then they will seriously begin to ramp up refinery capacity. Of course, the environmentalists will be in that discussion, as well.

So...is this oil shale or not? What do the mean by "trapped in rocks?" That sounds like oil shale to me...but it seems like they would have just called it that if that was the case.....so maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah, I couldn't find any info in the article that came out and said oil shale, but when it mentioned some reserves that reached into Canada, I began to think of the oil sands...

I've done a little reading and they speak of wells, drilling and pumping crude oil. The geology of the area has shale which appears to make the drilling more difficult (a lot of talk of horizontal drilling). I think that is the "trapped in the rocks" part.

Here's some more info:

The Bakken Trend: Lost Dutchmen Mine of the Oil Patch? - Seeking Alpha

Findley reviewed old drilling logs and old seismic data from abandoned wells and fields in the Bakken. Findley, in a moment of true inspirational genius came to the conclusion that all other attempts at the Bakken had missed the oil source entirely and had drilled right through it bypassing the oil that lies between two shale layers.

I'm guessing this is what is meant by saying it is trapped in the rocks.

We need to develop geo thermal and solar and electric cause oil will run out sooner or later and we can tell the Arabs to go to hell. Don't ya just love run on sentences.

no doubt, but the environmentalists will cry and protest. if you ask me we should get all these crazies and ship them off to Canada or somewhere else

They would complain the buses we would use to ship them off wernt "green". They would then find a tree in ND and live in it.

hell i'll buy them bicycles to ride. can't get any greener then that. if they don't like that then they can walk

If the environmentalists don't want drilling they should present a VIABLE alternative that can be put into mass production in the same time frame. AND have a plan to do just that. Otherwise they need to STFU. Either bring an alternate solution to the table or stay home. We all know that fossil fuels will be gone one day and I am all for finding an alternative quickly. But in the meantime, use what we have available. And spend our money here instead of OPEC.

Geothermal, wind and solar are drops in the bucket...

did anyone see the guy on the discovery channel that took old grease from fast food fryers and turned it into deisel?

this guy did it in his garage so there's no excuse for not being able to do it on a large scale.

It's not hard to do but you need grease. Believe it or not it's tougher to get than you think. We had a student that was making it in his garage as well. They tried to pick it up from restaurants but that was problematic for 2 reasons:

1. Companies already have contracts to do it.
2. Takes gasoline (or bio-diesel) to collect it.

It can work in some situations but it's not a major solution.

Seriously as advanced as we are, surely we can drill safely in Antarctica Or North Dakota. What is the problem? The Earth regenerates. We'll be fine to live off of nature. OUR nature to be exact.

Yep....at dinner tonight I was talking to some profs from Colorado School of Mines and Colorado U who were saying that someone was just fined $15,000 (I think in Colorado..but I'm not sure) for backing up to a Burger King's grease dump and pumping it out...

It is really hard to fully grasp just how large of a scale we are talking about. I think that is why we tend to hear more talk about portfolio approaches than silver bullets. We as humans during this amazing age of oil were given an amazing gift.....it will be interesting to see what we do from here....

If the environmentalists willnot let us drill in the most remote corner of the planet in Alaska, there seems to be no hope of them allowing us to drill anywhere else.
