I, like many, am disappointed in the Gruden fallout.

That said, let's put together a legitimate list of candidates based upon the following criteria:

1) No pipedream names, ala Stoops, Carroll, Peterson, Mora, Harbaugh, ect ... Coaches that would actually come here.

2) Can contend on the field on gameday with the big boys of the SEC (Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Richt).

3) Can compete in the living rooms of recruits with those same big boy coaches, but also newer names like Sumlin, Freeze, Mullin, Muschamp, Franklin, ect...

4) No Strong, Fisher, or Golden allowed. Why? Because I don't think they fill the criteria of 2 and 3, plus, we've already got those names. Looking for other names / legitimate options.

Given your requirements Patterson is basically all that is left.

I think the list is Gundy, Fisher , Strong, Davis, and Fedora in that order. I'd like to see Strong. He's a legit up and comer with a defensive prowess. Whoever we get is gonna have to be able to recruit. That's the area we are lacking at most here recently. I know people wanna say Sunseri ruined our defense. But take all of our defensive starters and put them on LSU, Bama, SC, Georgia, and Fla and not a one of them starts for those other teams. Talent is where we lack on d. Unfortuately we are gonna have another lack of it on offense once Bray, Hunter, and Patterson leave. If we want to compete with the best in the SEC, then we have to have comparable talent. College football is past the days where you could "coach em up." Just look at the National Championship winners. Do a little research and you'll see that the Championships correlate nicely with top recruiting classes. This is an often overlooked simple fact.

Very good!...Ok how about Butch Davis, Bobby Petrino "I know past bullcrap but no NCAA problems"..Davis was cleared of any at UNC...I personally like Gus Malzahn as the diamond in the rough...His offenses are exciting and with the right DC he could be trouble to some teams in the SEC...Would also like Patterson but not sure he will even give us a listen right now...Oregon OC Mark Helfrich could be a good one as well...These are just a few off the top.

You really think Strong, Fisher, or Golden can compete with Saban, Miles, Spurrier, and Richt?

You really think they are legitimate?

Not just who we would take ... for God's sake we took Dooley! Legitimate, as in would come here, and could compete with the top of the SEC.

Legitimate names anyone?
Not really?

That's the point I'm making.

(Patterson, maybe.)

All the SILLY stipulations eliminated like 110 active D-1 coaches. JEEZ. If OP has someone in particular on his mind, just go ahead and say who it is.

Jesus Christ if Les Miles can win big on a consistent basis, I have little doubt that Charlie Strong would do the same.

Fisher
Davis
Petrino

In that order is who I would go after. OP is nuts to think Fisher shouldn't be top of mind.

There really is no one that fits all of your criteria except for Gruden and Petrino. It's not like there is someone else out there that we just haven't though of yet. The SEC has has 5 out of the top 10 coaches in the nation (Saban, Spurrier, Miles, Richt, and Muschamp).

I truly believe that a foundation has been set with Chaney, Graham, Pittman, and Hinshaw. If we can retain that core group of assistants and bring in a defensive minded head coach along with a solid DC we're going to be alright. For respect of the 4 aforementioned stipulations I like Petersen, Shaw, and Tubbs (really handcuffed me to choose this)

With those stipulations the only name I can come up with is Butch Davis maybe Tuberville.

Did I say that?
I said we have to compete with him.

I have no one in mind, was actually hoping Volnation did.
What is silly about the stipulations? If we don't get someone in here that can match x's and o's on the field, and jimmy's and joe's in recruiting, we will not be relevant again in the SEC for years to come!

So, anyone else got suggestions, or just wanna slam the OP.

Miles just demonstrates what you can do with insane talent. What he lacks as a coach, he easily makes up with the talent he consistently brings in.

The SEC has has 5 out of the top 10 coaches in the nation (Saban, Spurrier, Miles, Richt, and Muschamp), so it is really hard to compete with that. Fisher, Golden, Strong, etc could probably get us back to a winning record but they aren't going to get us to the top of the SEC. There really aren't any "homerun" coaches available now that Gruden has turned us down. And by homerun, I mean guys like Saban, Myer, Carrol, Harbough. Personally, I think we should maybe give Tressel a look.

They all suck. Its Gruden or else....just hire the guy who works down at the local Pilot Station.

If UT wants to get back to playing big boy football, they need to hire a top notch coach. Gundy, Strong, Fisher, Franklin (major douche) are good coaches but we need GREAT.

Time to start watching lawn bowling on The Ocho. I hear the team from Trinidad and Tobago is really good.

Exactly my point. You can be an average coach and still win big if you have elite talent. Charlie Strong would have no problem bringing in talent.
