Letter from Coach Fulmer

LOOK!!! I found the real letter!!!

Dear Tennessee Fans,

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for being vol fans. Your critical eye and booster money is what keeps me motivated year in and year out.

Phillip Fulmer

We really blew it this year as a team. I passed the buck around even when I know I shouldn't have, thinking I could get away with it...guess what...I did.

Now that the season is over, I am taking some of my salary and going on a cruise to get away from you people. We're doing lots of things well, if you compare us to MTSU and Kentucky. We grossly underachieved offensively, and special teams sucked, too. As I've said before, the results this year are unacceptable and accountability starts with me (in theory--at least that's what I say in public--I really don't mind if someone wants to take a bullet for me).

My staff and I are feeling a lot of heat for the mishaps this season and we will be busting tail to right the ship that is Tennessee. We recruit terrific players and then allow them to underachieve while we simultaneously under-develop them.
If it weren't for all the critics and boo birds out there, I'd feel absolutely no pressure to make any changes. These players are just kids and although some will make 3 times my salary in a year or two, I simply can't get upset at them...I believe in giving pats on the back, softly clapping my hands and saying, "we'll catch that game winning pass nest time." We have had many great moments, games and seasons together and will again (hopefully). Tennessee football is about pride, and it's my first priority to restore that pride that I tarnished with this embarrassing effort we put together this year.

Go Vols!

First, I agree w GAVol. Appears to be an attempt at damage control, but let's give him the benefit...this time.

With that said, I HOPE HE NEVER LET'S THE PROGRAM SLIP to OUR PRESENT CONDITION AGAIN. NEVER settle for a last second 50 yd. field goal or an extremely late quarter rally against weaker opponents or a near miracle defensive stop at Neyland to become ACCEPTABLE! Especially when sub-par coaching is obvious to everyone.

NOW GO SELECT A DRIVEN, HUNGRY, PROGRESSIVE, INNOVATIVE, FAST PACED OFFENSIVE THINKING STAFF AND SHOW JOE PA MORE THAN ONE OLD COACH CAN CHANGE STYLES.

I read where Cut addressed the offense and told them that he expected to score at least 30 points in any game. I think that's a good step, or a good goal at least.

This is a step in the right direction. I am disappointed however that CPF wasn't able to see (or maybe was in denial) this downward spiral for sometime now. If the fans were able to see it for several years then you would think that someone on the staff was able to see or even sense it coming. I can accept CPF's letter with gratitude as a fan. I only hope this was a lesson for everyone in CPF's camp including himself to not become complacent with the football program. The national championship was wonderful in 98 but it's time to move on and achieve great things once again and not rest on past laurels. Go Vols.

I, for one, believe that we will see the strongest recruiting "effort" we've had in a few years. Whether we get the bigtime recruits we need remains to be seen...However, I think the recruiting thing is the place to start getting things righted, and I believe it will be somewhat of a predcitor of everything else that needs to follow.

So, here's hoping that our coaches can get out there and get the guys we need to get back to where we are accustomed to being...fighting for the SEC championship, and then the big one, the NC.

Soooooooooooooooooo, go recruiters...and Gooooooooooooooo Vols!

U know that was a great post and it really got my attention.  I have probably been one of the worst on here as far as bashing fulmer goes.  It is good to see him making necessary changes for the program.  I only hope that he makes changes internally as well.  U got to face it he has been lacking in a lot of areas.  Maybe this season has opened his eyes, and will make him change alot of his own ideas of how this program should be run.  U are right we as vol fans should stand behind our team and coaches no matter who they are.  I guess alot of fans including myself should do some soul searching and start being more positive about the football program.  It is great being a Vol fan even when things arent going to good.  I guess thats when u know u truly bleed orange or not.  Looking forward to 2006 and GO VOLS!!!!!!!!

I'm not seeing much crying as you say on here. All I see is people who keep dwelling on this and mention something negative like this in every post. If you're so anxious to move on, set the example and shut up about those who complain. MOVE ON!

From now on, unless I name you. Just assume that I am not talking to or about you. I prefer to converse with those who know football and more precisely Tennessee football.

Are you directing that comment to me? Are you saying I don't know football or UT football? I mean I want to make sure who that was directed to.

Yes you. Talking to you is like playing tag with a person on crutches. Not much fun.

So unless I mention you, do us both a favor and just ignore my posts. Thanks,

With the first 4 games at home in 2006, we'll see just how quick a fix we have on the offense. I still think some of us will be surprised who will be starting QB in 2006! :clapping:
Don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but Erik may have his work cut out.

Don't go blaming Phil because it's not his fault. The team has to produce and it's up to the players how much effort they want to put forth. He needs to instill in the 2006 team the same thing he did in 1998. :clapping: :eek:k:

I'm a "die hard Vol fan" through and through.

Dear Tennessee Fans,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the great support you give our team. Your passion and pride for our program is what makes us special!
Phillip Fulmer

This year was a disappointing season for everyone in the Tennessee family. We started this season with great expectations and failed to live up to those expectations. I assure you that no one is happy about our season - especially me, and I know that our fans deserve better than what we produced this year.

Now that the season is over, I am taking a step back and re-evaluating the entire program. We're doing a lot of things well - especially our defense, but obviously not enough. We grossly underachieved offensively, and special teams were erratic at best. As I've said before, the results this year are unacceptable and accountability starts with me.

My staff and I have great determination to get things back on track. In order to get things turned around, we first have to look at what happened this season. I'm doing a complete audit of everything in our program. No stone will be left unturned and no question left unanswered as to what went wrong.

I've taken some steps already and others are in short order. I have made some coaching changes to move forward. I feel the addition of David Cutcliffe as offensive coordinator is a great step forward for us. He is a great football coach, but better yet he's a leader and teacher. He will challenge our thinking, be creative with our offense and very demanding of our players.

I appreciate the support and patience I've received from the administration and Tennessee fans everywhere to make the adjustments I need to make to get back to where I believe we should be. We have had many great moments, games and seasons together and will again. Tennessee football is about pride, and it's my first priority to restore that pride.
Go Vols!

Glad to know I cause you so much joy. You can always ignore. My problem is that you're always crying about people whining about Fulmer. Your crying about others crying makes you no different. Of course you don't see that because you're too busy crying. I hardly ever see a post from you saying anything positive. It's always griping or crying about something. So by default that makes you no different than the people you always complain about.

Well, I'm not going to critique his letter. I'm also not feeling benevolent because it's near the season.

1. I bet he does not want another year like this one. The stress is too great.

2. I know from experience there were times in my job when things were going less than I expected. It's a no fun situation.

3. Let's all just get it on for next year.

4. I hope Coach Cut puts their nose to the grindstone.

5. I like Cut's quote, "Well, they're gonna do it the way we want it done" Speaks volumes. That's "deckplate leadership".

There's a happy :huggy: medium that exist in both arguments that most of us fall in. I think we all agree no one was happy with the direction the team is in, now CPF has made some changes and all we can do is wait to see if we plug the right holes. I'm happy there was an admission of the problem. :eek:k:

I just think it's funny how people criticise people for criticising.....such a vicious circle. I'm merely pointing it out and he's getting more irate about it.

I've seen most people here moving on about heavy criticism on what has happened. I think most are at least cautiously optimistic about the future, if not VERY optimistic. I just think whining about whiners does little to stop the whining in the first place. If it bothers him that much it might be wiser to help the problem rather than make it bigger.
