I'm not sure freedom of the press implies any sort of integrity on the part of the press. The burden is always going to be on the reader to process whatever they read and interpret it correctly. If people want news of a certain quality or ideological bias, they'll vote for it with their wallets.
Of course, there's a flipside to the issue which is that readers also bring their own set of assumptions to what they read causing them to perceive bias where little actually exists.
