Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto by Mark Levin, famed Conservative author and radio host, is a 2009 New York Times best-selling political themed book. The book was #1 on New York Times’ best-selling list for 11 out of 12 weeks and has sold over a million copies. The book has been both celebrated by Conservatives and despised by Liberals everywhere. Despite all of its accolades however, Liberty and Tyranny has not been met without some resistance. One such critic is Terry Krepel, whom will be quoted later as well, who stated: “Levin's book is just right-wing talking points served up in a different format -- as the beliefs of ‘Conservatives’ and how they differ from ‘Statists’ (spoiler: conservatives are good, statists are bad), concluded by a bullet-point ‘conservative manifesto.’ Anyone familiar with hard-right conservative ideology already knows what's in it.” Before one either praises or damns Mr. Levin’s book it is important to first ascertain his objective and whether or not he succeeds in fulfilling this objective.
Mr. Levin’s objective is to not only point out the differences in outlook of the Conservative vs. the Statist but to also point out how the rule of the Statist has crippled the country into a shell of its former self and also calls for a new kind of more aggressive Conservative to take action. His basic argument in the book is this: The difference between the Conservative and Modern Liberal is that for the former, "the civil society has as its highest purpose its preservation and improvement," whereas for the latter it is "the supremacy of the state." Because people and society do not fit his view of how things should be, the Modern Liberal uses the power of the state to force change (hence the term “Statist”

, resulting in a soft tyranny. Mr. Levin argues that Conservatives follow the same principles that the country was built on, those of the founding fathers, and that the Statist follows only the path to more power. This viewpoint does in fact portray the Conservative as an altruistic person whereas the Statist is an avaricious and petty soul who is out only for themselves, as Mr. Krepel alluded to. Is this true? Are Statist truly behind America’s current problems? Mr. Levin provides many examples and facts throughout his book of the Statist’s evil schemes at work, but these “facts”, are they truly factual? To find out, one must take a look at all of these facts (or a handful in this case) and weigh the information to make one’s own decision on what is true or not.
From here I am going to start with the counterpoints by first stating Levin's thoughts and then countering with both thoughts from other points of view and with facts that contradict what he states. Thoughts?
