Lindsey Nelson Stadium,

I had to look like the biggest idiot in the world walking in there on friday night and going "oh hell yeah!" when I saw them still hanging up. Its simple things in life for me.

I do think they added a urinal and redid the floors in the guys restroom. That's about all I could tell.
But the sound system is much improved.

So the floors are no longer pale yellow?

Agreed. Very big improvement in the sound system but honestly not much else to see as a fan this season. Most improvements will be seen and experienced next season. Candidly, I’m disappointed in the slow progress but realize the unmarked utilities set them back but expected so much more.

I don't think there was ANY way the stadium work would have been largely completed by opening day even if the utilities reach sentience and moved themselves.

Every local (East Tennessee) infrastructure project from interstate expansion, to Henley Bridge renovations, to viaduct replacement, to new dorm construction is seemingly delayed by unforeseen utility problems.

It's never due to poor planning, contractor bidding on too many projects, or timeline mistruths.

KUB must be paid millions to be everyone's scapegoat.

One problem with so many of these old utility easements is that they were "blanket" easements without certain definition.

For instance, a gas company or an electric company would get a deed for an easement over "the property conveyed in Deed recorded in Deed Book X, Page Y", rather than a specific description "from point A to point B, and being 5 feet on either side of said line."

The first gives you knowledge that a utility crosses the property, but gives you no idea where it is.
The second gives you a defined 10 foot wide margin in which a utility may be located.

The second is far easier to plan and build around. The first is a treasure hunt.

No kidding. I literally saw entire skyscrapers go up from scratch in Nashville before the Student Union at UT could be completed. It seems like anything in Knoxville takes forever to build. And there are always delays for some reason.

Just a guess, but the skyscrapers were probably privately funded while the Student Union was paid for by the "gubment" lol. It takes time to get all the kickbacks worked out plus which politician's relatives and big donors are awarded contracts.

I was trying to give them a little grace, but I agree with you. The reality is that the renovation has been ridiculously slow, and they are far behind schedule. At this point, I’m not sure they will be ready by Feb 2026, but sincerely hope I’m wrong. Based on the renderings, it will be beautiful once finished.

Even privately funded buildings have to get through all the local government red tape, though.

I managed the IT infrastructure for a business that was in the Student Union during that time and I can't tell you how many times they dug into someone's fiber optic cabling causing outages. It was almost every week for a few months.

It's because of that dang karst. Look it up! It's why there are like 5M cubic yards of concrete under Food City Center. :p
