Any word on Ortega's injury?

Mad posted an interview, but I think no conclusions were made other than no reason to have him out there limping around, I think CTV said “I was hoping for a Kirk Gibson moment” or something like that. I don’t think there was a time line declared.

I’d expect Ben Joyce will be the player that gets used the most in the highest leverage situations. I think Tony is rightfully being very careful with his workload at this point in season
I agree he is watching his workload, as he should. As far as high leverage situations, he is not there yet in my opinion. In those situations, there is no room for error. Zero. Can’t afford a walk in those situations, usually runners are inherited and many times a strikeout (or more than one) is a necessity. CTV is putting him in those situations now to see how he does. Right now, I don't think he is the guy. You not only need great stuff, you have to have a special mentality and the ability to handle the pressure. Maybe he will get there, but I dont think he is there yet.

‘Zactly. Definitely takes more than hundo plus. Pretty sure Frank can help him get there.

I get what you are saying but right now I’m not sure who we have that is a better option. Connel is crafty but I don’t know how far that will carry him against elite hitters. He definitely did well in Houston though. Sewell as a nice delivery and a good slider and a decent sinker but he’s struggled some early on. Texas seemed all over him. I could see Beam maybe getting some close opportunities if Tidwell and Halverson ( pretty sure I misspelled that)come back. I’m by no means an expert but I predict Joyce will have the best ERA and FIP amongst our relievers. The scoreboard in Houston said he was throwing sinkers as well as 4 seamers, if that’s true that bodes well for us

When pitchers have great stuff, and are comfortable in high leverage situations, they have an arrogant swagger about them. When Joyce starts showing that, you'll know he's ready.

I’m not sure who that guy will be either. It will play out. Honestly, I believe Sewell has the makings to be that person. But we shall see. As far as ERA, that’s a good stat. But for high leverage situations it isn’t the primary one. Coaches look at IR%, which is the percentage of inherited runners that score. If a guy comes in with two runners on and they both score before he gets out of the inning, his ERA is 0.00, but did he do his job? No. That’s why you hear coaches like CTV and others say “I should have given so-and-so a clean inning to start with” Some guys are just better when they start an inning vs coming in to a bad situation. We will have that guy, until then all we can do is watch it play out.

Joyce will have to get his feet wet with the high leverage situations before you’ll ever know if he’s built for them. Unfortunately he also has to continue increasing his pitch counts if he wants to go deeper in relief. I think you’ll see a combination of Sewell-Connell-Halvorsen-Joyce-Mabrey-Beam-Walsh as the guys Frank and Tony let go in 2+ inning reliefs once we’re in SEC play. It’s clear they trust most, if not all of them, in pressure situations already. If Burns & Tidwell get you 6 full innings on average, your bullpen will be fully stocked for any tricky Saturday matchups.

No, I’m not saying he is playing poorly, but I think the change will be made by the end of the season.
Russell frames the ball really well and looks very natural at a very tough position. Chuck Taylor is an elite defensive catcher but Dickey’s bat is elite. Great depth at catcher for sure.

I think this is the first coach where I just assume any differing opinions that I have from Vitello are just wrong. I like the idea of getting Moore into the lineup and I think Ortega’s defense is hurting this team, but Vitello has earned the benefit of the doubt. I would leave Luc in the lineup because he’s a leader and a great first baseman. Maybe let Burke play some midweek games or DH some with Dickey at LF. I’ll be curious to see what happens with Booker and Chambers. Both have talent but are on the outside looking in right now, especially with Scott being the first OF off the bench this weekend.
The depth of this team is impressive. Lots of talent on the bench that would be starting elsewhere.
