Self-publishing is not exactly financially viable; however, it is less time consuming and I do not have to deal with writing a hundred cover letters for a hundred different Publishing Houses and Literary Agents who each have their own quirks.

Right now, I write more for my own edification (as I write I learn more about both myself and what it is that I am writing about). Financially, the fiance has a good job and I will, eventually, once I get my PhD and land a decent professor gig.

Don't know about religion and philosophy but perhaps you can contact the academic book publishers in these areas once you have a draft and see whether they would have an interest. Thats how its done in my field. Having a book published would be damn good for the vita when you start looking for an academic gig. Good luck.

I do not know who wrote the Gospels, why they wrote them, nor who their intended audiences were.

That said, I will more readily believe that they intended to write allegories than I will believe that the miracles they write about actually took place.
