Cocke County was known for moonshine and cock fights. Hancock County is stuck in the 40s or 50s.

I met a guy from Chicago who moved to Hancock County. I commented that it must be quieter than the big city. He said 'Heck no. There is more stuff that happens in this county that scares me than ever did in Chicago.' True story. :)

BTW, this describes just about every county in Kentucky except Fayette, Jefferson, Warren, and the handful that are really Ohio.

I was in Cookeville for a few years in the early 80's. You could buy beer but no booze. Jackson county turned wet during that time but before (and after), Bo Petty had a little market with a drive through. Just pull up order your (illegal) booze, moonshine or herbal remedy that you wanted. If he didn't know you, you just had to mention you knew so-and-so and you were on your way with a smile on your face.

I'm not sure if I know anyone who could "sruvive" in the streets. Even a gorilla.
