Recently it has become so that I need to log in each time I open a window to Volnation, sometimes if I leave my computer unattended for a short while, then I have to log on again when I click on a post or response.

In times past I might have to log in Monday morning if Freak had been working on the site on Sunday night but I would be good to go all week.

Now I have to log in repeatedly.

Someone mentioned checking something but I didn't catch it.

Talk slow and use simple terms, I grew up before TV was invented, no joke, I don't understand all that many computer terms.

Hard drive is going to the mailbox in a snow storm.

Micro chips are the little chips in the bottom of the bag after you eat the big chips.

Upload is what happens after you cut firewood.

Download is what you do with the wood when you get home.

Megahurtz is what happens if you stand too close when the download is taking place.

Modem is what we did to the hay fields last month.

There is probably a box I can check to keep me logged on but I don't know where to find it.

Are you using private browsing in Firefox? Are your security settings turned up very high, such that you don't allow cookies?

Definitely sounds like a cookie issue.

This is the first, albeit weak, sign of the proliferation of technological singularity into VN. It doesn't want you to post anymore copy/paste jobs about 'moslems' so it logs you out everyday in an attempt to permanently block you. It just can't figure out how to stop you from logging back in.

VN will learn...

If you use internet explorer:
Open Internet Explorer
Hit Alt Key
Click Tools
Click Internet Options
Click Privacy Tab

What level are you on?

Medium, Medium High, High... etc?

If you use Firefox:
Open Firefox
Hit Alt Key
Click Tools
Does it say "Start Private Browsing"
or does it say "Stop Private Browsing"

If you don't use Firefox or IE, tell me what browser you use.

You mean a system in which the computer does
all the thinking so that the citizens never are
exposed to any thoughts that aren't politically
correct??

Don't they call that an "Idiocracy?"

We're getting there it would appear.

What if the computer malfunctions, as Hal did in
'2001?'

What if the citizens are divided into useful idiots
and expendable idiots as in soilent green?

Don't let me make you think outside your box.

Thanks, I tried but when I hit 'alt' no window came up.

Do you mean open the browser window and then hit 'alt?'

I faintly remember setting this computer on 'high' when
I first started using it, it is old as the hills.

I have a standby computer that I would already have
switched over to but when I hook it up and try to
access the internet, it won't recognize the modem.

Any thoughts on that??

On this one, even if I don't close the vn window but
just disconnect, when I reconnect to the internet, I
have to log on vn again and even if I don't disconnect
but just do something else for a while, I have to log
back on to vn again after about thirty minutes or so
even if I havn't closed the window.

As I said, I used to only have to log on vn the first of the
week and would stay logged on all week and I havn't
changed anything on my computer.

Yes, open the browser, and then hit the alt key. If you are using a newer version of firefox or internet explorer, you should see, right below the title bar, several dropdown menu items such as "File, Edit, Bookmarks, Tools" or the like.

If you already see such, click Tools, then Options, then follow the above same as before.

Dial up is the only thing available here escept
overpriced satelite.

Actually this piece of junk has '98.

I tried your suggestion but didn't get the drop down
menu.

If you go into the control panel and click internet options, is there a box checked that says delete browsing history on exit? If so, uncheck it.

You were eighteen in 1941...?

The first TV went on the air in Nashville in 1951.

I do remember listening to FDR fireside chats over
a battery radio before we had electicity.

Did gsvol just call Freak an idiot?

Any fool can plainly see Freak is no idiot.

Would it not be intuitively obvious to the most casual
of observers that it is some sort of deranged thinking
that I had just called Freak an idiot??

Really, no kidding, how do you come up with that
question?

Can you point, for me, in the picture, File, Edit, View, Tools ?

You are telling me you don't see this?

We are now going to going to have to go with hman's route, because apparently the simplest of instructions are rather complicated.

Click Start, click Control Panel (Might be under Settings), Click Internet Options
Click Privacy Tab.

What do you see?

----------------

For your 2nd computer issue. Do you see an icon on your desktop that looks.. nevermind, just hit Start, go to Run
Copy and paste following: "C:\WINDOWS\CONTROL.EXE Sysdm.cpl, System,1"
Hit Enter

You should be in device manager:
device.gif

Click the "+" next to modem. What do you see? Is there a yellow exclamation mark?

I went to control panel, clicked 'advanced' and
unchecked 'unused folders in history and favorites'
which was the nearest thing I saw to what you
said.

Still have to log in but then I got kicked offline today,
which happens frequently, and after I reconnected, I
didn't have to log on again.

That's some improvement.

Thanks for your indulgence.

I was up front that I don't speak computer lingo. :mf_surrender:

Click Privacy Tab.

I see a scale and mine is set about midway on;
'blocks third party cookies that use personally
identifiable information about you without your
implicit consent.'

Options 'import' and 'advanced.' Mine is set on
'default.'

Near the botttom is has an 'edit' option "to override
cookie handling for individtual websites."

I'm with you so far.

-----------------------------
I'm going to put off working on the reserve computer
for the time being.

But thanks for the info, I'll pick that up later.

Yea, I thought it would be easier to do it within IE, but that way works. It is on me for not being clear. When you hit alt, it should highlight File.

It is un-important.

Doing the Start>>Control Panel>>Internet Options>>Privacy Tab is good enough for now.

So it is set midway, does it say anything next to it, like "Medium," "Medium High," etc?

Click Advanced. You should see something like this:
InetCPL-AdvancedPrivacy.png

Click "Override Box," and check Accept under First Party and Accept under 3rd Party. (We can change 3rd Party once we sort the issue). Click OK. And Ok until out of the settings.

Then, click Start, go to Run, type "Cookies" without the quotes. Does it open up a folder with a bunch of files?

If so, scroll down til you see "vbseo_loggedin"

Delete it.

Find "bbsessionhash"

Delete it.

Go back to VN. You should have to log in. After you log in, and check "Remember Me," close everything, disconnect. Reconnect. Come back to VN.

Do you have to log in again?

Keep me posted.

Above the settings option is says 'Medium."

When I click 'advanced' it looks notihg at all like:

InetCPL-AdvancedPrivacy.png

It has a long list you can check or uncheck.

General categories are;
accessability
browsing
http 1.1 settings
java
java vm
multimedia
printing
security

There is no 'override' box to check.

Oh wait, I just reread your post and understand
you mean click 'advanced' in 'privacy' rather than the 'advanced' tab at the top.

(Why don't they ever have a tab for 'retarded?')

So I clicked 'override' and oked out.

Clicked run and am searching for "vbseo_loggedin" .

Don't see it, do you know James Nordan, I think
is has taken over my computer.

I have nine and a half pages of 'anyuser', vn has
two cookies in that category.

james nordan must have a hundred pages, neither has one called "vbseo_loggedin" .

Neither category has a "bbsessionhash" either.

Hit Control+A while in Cookies and then hit shift+delete.

That will just clear them all out.

When you have the Cookies window up, do you see, at the top, a menu consisting of File, Edit... etc?

Click Edit, then Click Select All.

Then hit, on your keyboard, the Delete key.

Does Dr. Bill have a last name?
