When you have the Cookies window up, do you see, at the top, a menu consisting of File, Edit... etc?

Click Edit, then Click Select All.

Then hit, on your keyboard, the Delete key.

Does Dr. Bill have a last name?

Dr Bill taught computer science at hoodlawn, he is a big UT fan.

Can't think of his last name just now.

OKie doke, deleting 1,692 items, looks like it's going to take a while.

About 30 minutes.

Thanks.

OK, started with 1,692 cookies.

When it got down to 1,569 a window opened and said couldn't delete anymore hard disk was full.

So I opened recycle bin (which said it was empty) and I selected delete all.

Started over and it deleted one and then a window popped up and said; cannot delete (name of cookie): access is denied.

It also said; make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

So I rebooted and tried again, same thing, I tried just highlighting 10 or so lines at various places in the list and keep getting the same window and the top cookie on the list will be in the message.

So now I've still got 1,568 cookies.

You have 1,568 cookies? Wow.

Let's flush your temporary files and see what comes up.

Go to "My Computer"
The icon will either be on your Desktop, or within the Start Menu.

Once in, right click on C: drive and choose Properties. From there, go to Disk Cleanup.

Select Temporary Internet Files and Temporary files in the checklist.

Hit OK.

After this is done, hit Start and then Run
Type cmd
Hit enter

In command prompt, type
cd c:\windows\Cookies
hit enter
Type dir
hit enter

At the bottom, how many files does it list? If it is still 1,568, make sure you are still listed as being in c:\windows\cookie and type

del *.*
hit enter

after done, type dir and hit enter
How many files now?

If you are still getting an access denied, make sure internet explorer is closed.

When I (right)click 'properties' I get
standard buttons
address bar
lock toolbar
text labels

I don't see disk cleanup.
I have 42 items + 23 hidden in drive c

You Right Click on the "Local Disk (C: )". You then choose properties:

right_click_option.gif

Within Properties:

hard-drive-properties.jpg

You click Disk Cleanup.

You then select Temporary Files (Might Say Temp) and Temporary Internet Files

You then Click Ok.

Can't I get to the same place by pressing start, going to programs, accessaries, system tools and clicking disc cleanup?

Any way, using your path I end up with:
(mine says used space 4 gb free space 0 gb)
temp internet files 0.00mb
downloaded program files 0.00mb
recycle bin 0.00mb
old scandisk files in root folder 0.03mb
temp files 0.41mb

I still get the same reading every time I do that.
It won't erase the temp files or old scandisk files.

I used to be able to delete all that but one day my computer quit deleting the temp files and it slowly built up to 0.13mb and then all of a sudden it went to 0.41mb and has remained there for quite some time.

Ocassionally the temp internet files will have something and that will delete for me.

I've used the tools disk cleanup, defragmentor and scan disk except that now the defragmentor won't complete the task anymore because of 'not enough memory.'

Heh. You are out of disk space.

You need to remove crap on your computer you don't use anymore.

You can try to manually delete Temp files by going:
Start>>Run
Type %Temp%
Hit enter

But, until you free up some harddrive space, you are pretty much screwed.

I suggest getting rid of old programs you don't use anymore.

It won't delete the temps (1,571) either.

I tried looking at the programs list and started
off with retrospect 5.14, it wouldn't delete.

Then I tried sony CD extreme, same thing, it won't
delete anything, says make sure disk not full.

You think it would help if I gave the stack a tap
or two with a framing hammer?

I have a few note books, think maybe if I deleted
one of those I could get enough disk space to delete
temps and cookies?

You have to free up disk space in order to delete things. Unfortunately, you've hit a point where that is almost impossible, because you don't have enough "swap" space to do so.

Win98. Hm.

Can you F8 into command prompt in Win98?

Let's try.

Restart your computer, immediately start hitting F8 over and over again until you see a list similar to:

Start Windows Normally
Start Windows (Safe Mode)
Start Command Prompt

Go into Safe Mode and see if you can remove files using Disk Cleanup.

If not, reboot.

Start>>Run>>
Type cmd
Hit Enter

Type cd c:\windows\cookies
Hit enter
type del *.*
Hit enter
type dir
hit enter

Tell me what you see

type cd c:\windows\temp
hit enter
type del *.*
hit enter
type dir
hit enter

Tell me what you see.

type cd c:
hit enter
type dir /p
hit enter

Tell me what you see.

What do I see?? I see broken plastic and wires sticking out of the keyboard, eveidently I hit F8 too hard with the framing hammer. :)

No, actually F8 wouldn't work so I tried rebooting and typing in the things you suggested in 'run,' but each one prompted a window that says 'cannot find file.'

Anytime I reboot I get a window that says; "windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart and repair the system registry for you."

I've tried clicking OK but even though windows restarts the error isn't repaired.

I can use scan disk and select thourough and autimatically repair errors but that still doesn't solve my main problem.

You don't type them in "run" you type them in COMMAND PROMPT, which was why I said type "cmd" and "hit enter," from "run" which would open "command prompt."

If you aren't going to follow simple instructions, I cannot help you.
