That's the reason given in the report that TX and aTm decided on the Big 10 over the Pac 10. McClain was on 104.5 yesterday and was speaking as to how TX fit in with the Big 10 academically more so than the SEC.

They also fit in academically with the Pac-10...

They fit in academically anywhere, UTA is a pretty good school.

big 10 doesn't make a lot of sense. why bail on oklahoma, OSU, and ttech? wonder if this is a $$$ grab by texas. pac-10 might have to give them a bigger % of the pie.

The point was if they didn't go to the Pac 10, he saw them looking at the Big 10 before the SEC due to grants the Big 10 get with their research departments versus the SEC not having this. It sounds like the Pac 10 will not allow TX to have it's own network, so the Pac 10 may be eliminating itself.

Oh. Yeah, Pac-10 vs. Big Ten is a wash IMO.

I think Texas has had the idea of its own network written off for a while now. Being part of a conference is a safer way to guarantee that revenue.

Doesn't sound like they've written off the idea of having their own network and my be what keeps them out of the Pac 10. Who knows.

One of McClains other points was that the presidents make the final decision - not the ADs; and this is why he thought the Big 10 may land TX.

The academic talk is a bunch of BS. It's all about money.
The Big Ten is only preferring AAU schools with the exception of ND, which is a solid school in its own right. That is plenty evidence that conferences are preferring stronger academic institutions.

School presidents have sway here. They DO look at academics.

The academic talk is about money. The big ten gets money given to the conference as a result of the strong academics (research departments) whereas the SEC does not.

So who gives this money to the research depts? The research fairy?

That's a bunch of whooy it's all about the $$$ and the big 10 can offer more to TX than the pac 10, not to mention travel expense for all of the non revenue sports.

Texas has done fine as a member of the Big 12. Vandy does just fine in the SEC
