Look at Mark Helfrich

We'll see how Helfrich does once he is playing with players that he recruited. He inherited a loaded roster with tons of talent that was specifically recruited for Chip Kelly's offense. The offense is the same.

CBJ inherited zero and is piecing his offense together with what he had to work with.

Actually, for the record, Mariota was Helfrichs guy when Manziel decommitted. As the story goes he was in Hawaii scouting another player when he saw Mariota play. He told Chip the kid has major game and they brought him in to a camp with Manziel. When Manziel bolted for A&M they offered Mariota. Also keep in mind it was Chips offense, but Helfrich has been calling plays for years as the offensive coordinator. So really, when Chip left, nothing has changed.

learning on the job is also tough

butch and co. got one-upped all day yesterday from a scheme standpoint

Yesterday Butch learned how recruiting really means. He and not many others have every seen that much speed and talent on a football team. He will see at least one other team that has vast superior talent compared to other teams. Those two teams should play for the NCAA championship.

Their team did look good. HOWEVER, they also had loads of penalties. This shows a lack of discipline that is usually a result of COACHING. They will lose a big game due to penalties.

Agree, Oregon's got to fix the penalties or they will kill us at some point. And you are right, we didn't have that problem when Chip was head coach.

They've changed a bit. I said all along I expected Oregon to throw the ball more this year. Oregon did a really poor job throwing in the first two games. Much better against Tenn and that really changed how Tenn could defend the Ducks.
this is one way we were out schemed yesterday. we had no answer at all for the play action pass

According to several posters on here UT had the talent advantage. Of course, they simply based their conclusion on recruiting rankings.

And you can't really go by that

Oregon's team recruits to fit the scheme. They recruit speed, speed, and more speed and at every position.

Their scheme is designed to take advantage of that speed. The scheme is also designed to keep a less talented, but speedy team, and compete with bigger, more physical teams.

Oregon would never compete at this level if they went to a Pro with the QB under center. That's not a knock on Oregon . Its just not how their team is built

Much like Auburn when they tried to go to a Pro after Malzahn left. It was a disaster. That team too, was built to be a spread/read option. Talent had been recruited for that.

Just like a majority of our team was recruited for the Pistol, we are now hurting trying to run a read option with a QB and O line not designed for the read option

well then, people had better come up with a consistent opinion.

because a lot of people think the talent is there, it just needs to be coached up.

when everyone accepts that talent is a problem, butch jones will get the pass he deserves.
We've got talent in some places, but in others Such as Quarterback it's pretty depressing

You haven't been watching Pac refs...they love throwing flags.

Actually, Chip called all of the plays, and now Scott frost does. Helfrich, unlike Chip, trusts his OC with the play calling. He gave frost the green light to go for it in all 4th down unless he intervenes.

Exactly. Talent is the #1 problem. Mindset is the other. He's gotta change both as soon as possible.

I wouldn't say they had loads of penalties. Even if they did, their style of play and pace virtually negates them anyway. They looked plenty disciplined and well coached to me. They just beat us by 7 tds.... little too humbled to go nitpicking them on that.

It was Oregon and this isn't a 1990's Tennessee team..enough said.

This. One of our Fulmer 10-2 with a Citrus bowl loss would have beaten that Oregon team or at least kept it close. They are simply very talented and very deep. They have consistency in their program and they know their schemes well. I think a well run Stanford team, Bama, or Ohio State will either handle them or keep it close. That offense has been proven to be stoppable. We just don't have the horses. I don't blame the coaching, as this staff has been proven capable enough at other stops. Oregon is formidable yes, but they just haven't played a great team yet. Nebraska 95 would have held them to 10.

Butch was rt after looking at film our dB's screwed up royally. No eye discipline. Biting on run while receiver runs past them wide open. Letting receiver run post route while we set up on the out side of the receiver force them in and then run 10 yards behind them. We gift wrapped a lot its talent it is a huge gap and people need to wake up we are under dogsin almost eevery sec game for a reason we are not very talented. What we do have is very few talented upper class men and new raw talent.
