Look for improved D in '13.

Someone teach them to tackle and they will be immediately better. Scheme improvements will increase improvements beyond that.

The defensive backfield is still lacking overall speed...yes I get that the scheme will help. The other major problem I see is linebackers in pass coverage..Thats a major weakness.

This is true. How many times did we see our DBs chasing someone running for the goal line and actually close ground on them? Maybe a tight end, but not a RB or WR.

I just hope the coaches on defense can work together as one unit. If this happens, we should see immediate improvement on that side of the ball. I really like the speed of the EE's also. I'm excited about our future with this staff.

I think the frequency with which they got behind them in the first place is a much bigger issue.

I hope our defensive philosophy changes.
I'm not a fan of the "let um score as fast as possible so our offense can back on the field" approach to playing defense.

What I'm saying is I can watch tape and analyze football. Not just take a look and say they stink. Like 2 people who probably can't tie a pair of cleats.

You may be able to watch tape a lot, but if you really think that Waggner is SEC caliber--your analysis skills are pretty poor.

We were decent between the tackles--and did a fairly good job of stopping Bama's run game there. We lost it on the edge (against EVERYBODY WE PLAYED) and couldn't cut them off or catch up--THAT is strictly SPEED. AJ and Lathers (never recovered fully from injury) didn't have the speed to make tackles on the edge--or COVER. Hopefully, AJ increases his speed in the off-season.

Maggitt played hurt all year--and don't know how he will be next year after rehab....I believe Maggitt should play as an OLB in the 4-3--and think he would be like a Raynoch Thompson type of player...

Brewer is too slow to be playing safety and needs to be an OLB...

I do agree that we should be better--but the secondary will be woeful unless Randolph comes back 100%.

. . . We lost it on the edge (against EVERYBODY WE PLAYED) and couldn't cut them off or catch up--THAT is strictly SPEED. . .

It's as much about discipline and containment responsibilities as it is speed.

No team will keep the edge when they suck in and shorten it like we did this year. It was awful. You let any decent back get square to the line of scrimmage was quickly as we did, and he'll have a career day just about every time.

the defense is going to be better, if even by accident.

all i know (for people who think it was just an issue last year), is that some god awful florida offenses (that didn't know the forward pass was legal) put up 30 points in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

last season was a different level of bad that will not be repeated, but it's been a few years since tennessee has put a good defense on the field.

i can't remember the last time tennessee put pressure on qb's with any regularity

I don't disagree with what you're saying--but our ILBs didn't have the speed to make tackles 5 yds down the field on those end runs. Some of it was they didn't get off the blocks, some was getting sucked up as you say. But MOST was simple lack of speed in getting to the play.

Every defense gets caught out of position in every game. Most SEC defenses cover this with speed and determination to get to the ball and do not give up the huge plays our D did this last year from simple running plays and short pass plays.

Part of that is scheme and being out of position--but as the old saying goes--you can't coach speed, and speed covers a lot of mistakes. We didn't have either in 2012. :salute:

I think we could strategically place 13 divots (Dooley counting) on the field and put up better numbers than a Sal Sunseri coached D.

we do have some pretty good players in the front 7. The secondary really was one of the worst I have seen on any team ever. It HAS to be better. Pressure will hopefully make the secondary look better than it really is

What was sad is their was some talent on that "D" but without coaching and leadership it was a disaster that was bound to happen.

Lets see 2nd team all sec as soph, played injured most of Jr year and out of position at safety, preseason 2nd team heading into sr year. Also on all pre season watch list for top DB awards. Started every game since his sophomore year and just so happens this year is his worst. Seems like quite a few others saw a different player prior to this year as well. Prior to playing under our previous defensive staff he was seen as a 2nd-3rd round pick. If you really wanna fire shots you might want to actually study football first.

That's exactly why this team needs Lawson or Bellamy.

Wilcox was 28th in 2011.

The putrid UT offense in 2011 played as much a factor of the ranking of the defense as the actual talent of defense did.

The 2011 defensive stats were very misleading.
