Looking Ahead: SB Pitching Staff '16-'17

It's always been my understanding that velocity comes from the hip movement of the pitcher, not arm strength. I do agree that spin control and placement is very important and can be a continuously taught thing and can only assume using hips, more or less, can assist with velocity as well as placement. Parker was, and accepted, a scholly offer from OU as a HS freshman and it is said that she had very good spin and ball control then. She's been challenged at OU to try and master other ball movement in her arsenal and work on her defense. Not sure that she is throwing any harder than her hs days, but again, can only assume it has increased at least some.

I believe pitchers can increase their velocity as many MLB pitchers have through the years when they reach the majors. It is the same principle-hip turn and shoulder hip differential generates centripetal velocity same as in golf. It is learning more efficient and improved technique and understanding what generates velocity. But, coaches will tell you spin and location are more important than velocity. Some of the best pitchers whoever played the game only had average velocity.

P.S.-Hip shoulder differential is also where they get spin. The trick is getting the spin while also being able to locate it accurately.

What summer club team does Arnold play on?

I've notiched that an increasing number of collegiate pitchers are HEAVY--overweight young women who throw it pretty well, but I think stamina is an issue for them because they are not fit. And when you are not fit you are not going to be effective for very long. I don't think this was the case with the great pitchers in the past. Abbott and Osterman were both relatively thin--and both of them could throw effectively all day, and then come back and dominate the next day as well. Nowadays you see fewer and fewer pitchers going seven.

Arnold plays for Tennessee Fury Platinum. I'm not sure whether it's the same Fury club which Scarlet McSwain or CJ McClain used to play for or not. Probably not.

Thankfully, all our pitchers AND our position players look lean, mean, muscular and fit. LOL. God job by Ralph and Karen for recruiting physical specimens. :) The heaviest Lady Vol softball player I've seen in recent years has to be Cheyanne Tarango. Then again, she wasn't that bad compared to some of the players you mentioned/described in your post. :) Taylor Koenig looked heavy and slow too but she ain't that bad either.

I have to agree with you--there seem to be more heavy-set softball players nowadays than in the past. Why?! Genetics is one thing, but I doubt that all of sudden these daughters of heavy-framed parents picked up softball and started flooding the college softball teams?! We've always had pizzas, hamburgers, french fries, milk shakes, etc., too. Maybe the player pool got larger due to the increased popularity/explosion of the sport in recent years thus drawing the players of all shapes, sizes and forms to participate in the game and eventually earn college softball scholarships. I see all shapes and sizes every time I turn on my TV to watch a softball game.

She plays with the Tennessee Fury

Another reason is that since pitchers don't have to run as much compared to other players, I'm sure the coaches are purposely turning slow/big/bulky/heavy-set players into pitchers. I've seen it happen many times.

i'm assuming it is like hiking the Appalachian Trial, women put on weight and guys lose it

Ralph and Karen seem to have the good recruits coming in,as they usually do,hmmm I need some Orange colored Sunglasses for the softball team :)

it would have been great to of had Erin healthy the whole time she has been at UT,but it didn't happen and she is pitching pretty damn good right now, keep it up Erin :good!:

It looks as though Bria Bush is gone from the program. The Weeklys are working on getting a juco player to join the 2016-2017 pitching staff. Best of luck for success to Bria...

I wonder if Gretchen Greer of Columbia State JC is someone the Weekly's are considering for that third pitcher. She was 28 and 5 with a 1.26 ERA. She struck out 291 in 210 innings pitched. I would think she could do fairly well even moving up a big level like she would going to the SEC. There are certainly other JC pitchers but she is the best close to UT.

Similar to how Cat Hosfield and Shelby Burchell played for the Batbusters back in the day.

I believe Gabby Sprang, the stud pitcher we have for the class of 2017, is from Minnesota and plays travel ball in Georgia for I think the Atlanta Vipers.

Looking at the stats of some of the top JUCO pitchers that could catch the eye of Tennessee:
Kalen McGill RHP (College of Central Florida): 33-4 on the season, 1st team All-American.
0.83 ERA (tops in Division 1 JUCO), 124 K (4.48 K per game), BA Against .176, 29 BB.
- McGill is a player who spent her freshman year at South Alabama and was NFCA All-Region her first and only season there. Being from Gainesville it would be interesting to see if we recruit and get her out of Florida.

Ilona Andringa RHP (Chipola): 31-4 on the season, 2nd Team All-American
1.20 ERA (ranked 4th), 187 K (6.61 per game), BA Against: 0.200, 29 BB.
- Andringa is from the Netherlands and was named to the Dutch senior team for the 2016 World Championships. Chipola finished runner-up this year in Division 1 and Andringa was the work horse for the team. A pitcher with international experience and coming from a winning program might be something to look at.

I was going to put two other pitchers, Lexi Smith and the aforementioned Gretchen Greer, however Lexi Smith has signed with Texas A&M and Gretchen Greer signed with MTSU.

I think Gabby Sprang plays with the Georgia Impact. Ashely Morgan ('17), another UT verbal commit is playing with Gabby on the same travel ball team.

Obviously, Sprang is not the only Minnesotan recruit who has decided to play travel ball in warmer climate for apparent reasons. Justus Perry, a power hitter and an Auburn commit plays with the Birmingham Thunderbolts. Current LSU freshman pitcher Sydney Smith, who's also from Minnesota, played for a team in Wichita, Kan., last summer.
