Looking for car for teenage daughter

Thank the Good Lord, my 17 year old daughter and her friend weren't hurt Saturday night when she rolled her '11 Ford Focus multiple times on I-75 just south of the TN line. What I thought was a dangerously small a car held up like a tank.

Now, she needs a car. Her mom and I are divorced and do not get along (she forks with me and I don't take it well) so I'm looking for something under $7,000. Decent gas mileage is a must - she runs the roads like we all did at her age.

I have seen cars pop up a time or two on VolNationList but none there now. Thought I would toss it out and see if any of you guys had anything.

Thanks and GBO!

I think a 2011 Ford Focus is what is look for...

Late 80's to early 90's Volvo 240 station wagon. Reliable, slow, built like a tank. Perfect car for a teenager.

Came here to say the same, buy her a Swedish tank. You won't have to spend near 7K either.

I'd recommend a car built within the past 7-8 years that received high marks for safety.

A Volvo from the 1980s or 90s might have been tops in safety for its time, but its time was 20-30 years ago.

Take a look at this video to see how a 90s Volvo holds up in comparison to a more modern vehicle:

I was making no judgement on the character of his 17 year old daughter.

But, like the Nerd said, it's not a modern car and it wouldn't fare well today.

You don't have to go back to the 90s to find a good used Volvo in his price range.

Edit: Scratch that link! Car had 267K on it...impressive for being 6 years old.

Anyway, Volvos are safe and will last a long time if somewhat taken car of. Some of them are even fun to drive. Look at a little S40 maybe.

With an AM radio. That doesn't work well.

Bonus points for that weird burnt orange color they had going for a while.

Public humiliation has many pluses when it comes to teens and cars.

Glad that she came out OK. :hi:

lets look at some classic cars that Stephen King would approve of :)

be hard to run off the road and she won't be able to buy much gas for them,so she won't be driving much :)

nothing like big chrome bumpers

Consumer Reports lists reliable used cars by price range. Or you can just buy any Honda or Toyota.

Buy her a horse. It'll put your mind at ease.

Nobody ever got lucky in the back of a horse.

VM, have you made a decision yet

Her mom got her a '15 Hyundai Veloster. Like her Focus, it has NHTSA 5* safety rating so I'm good with it. She's pleased.

40,000 miles seems a bit high on a year and a half old car. Apparently, a car had to be purchased immediately. The ex and I don't play well together. Divorced 4 and a half years and her favorite past time is still sticking a knife in my back whenever possible... and I guess I don't tolerate that behavior very well.

Thank y'all for the input and laughs!

It probably came out in 2014 so over 2.5 years that is about 16k per year.

Even at 2015 that's still practically a new car. That's nice, she must have decent insurance. The cars I got at that age were "broken in".
