Looking for Pons to be the biggest surprise of 2019-20 season

About time I eat some crow: not sure I posted anything about it but I had very little faith that Pons would develop an offensive game. I was wrong and I'm damn happy about it. So awesome to see him blossoming this early. Fulky too. I'm pumped to see where they take us this season. GBO!

Pons will improve in all areas of his game, and with his incredible athleticism, he'll be the star of the coming season. A Clyde Drexler type player.

So far, so good. 2nd in scoring (16.3), 1st in FG% (67%), 2nd in 3pt% (62.5%), 1st in blk (2.7), 2nd in REB(4.7). Probably our best defensive player. And, I think he'll get better as he gets more experience and confidence. He's looking comfortable in his role. Looking a lot like Clyde the Glide in his Jr. year (15.9 pts, 8.8reb, 53.6 FG%, 0.5 BLK).

I never thought I'd see Pons develop this much so fast. The growth he's shown in his shooting ability alone is absolutely phenomenal. It's going to be exciting watching him get even better as the season goes on.

I know it doesn't really matter, but does anybody know if that Pons block on Carter made the SportsCenter Top 10 ? It should have, probably the best block I have ever seen by a Vols player. Carter is a dunking machine and even got a little revenge in the 2nd half with a dunk on Pons. Still, Pons balled out and UT got the W. I'm telling u all, give Barnes, at least 3 years, with kids that buy in and works hard, Barnes will make 'em a player. Look at Bone, Admiral, Kyle, Bowden, Turner, even Grant and now Pons, they all seem to start to reach their potential and beyond in that 3rd year. Hell, Fulk, giving him an extra year like Turner considering their injuries.

One of Barne's best turnarounds was Kevin Punter. Few coaches can develop a player as well as Barnes.

Was he the point guard from the Bronx , that Barnes totally changed his shot ? I been trying to think of his name for three days now

Thanks. Highway robbery, imo. U almost never see a block like that, when a kid cocks back for a one hand dunk like that and somebody catches that dunk and throws it to the free throw line. Either way, as good as an athlete as Carter is, Pons is comparable. I heard yesterday that Pons never lifted weights until he got to UT, according to the Sports Source. Talk about God-gifted

I heard that about Pons on the latest game broadcast. Really hard to believe with his physique.

Reactions: The Dog
In his latest episode of the College Hoops Today podcast where he interviewed Bruce Pearl, Jon Rothstein named off a few potential breakout players in the SEC this season and said Yves Pons was one of them.

I think we can safely assume Rothstein has no idea what he's talking about here. Would love for him to be right, but man, that seems ridiculously far off base.
You idiot. You unfathomable fool.

I’d pump the brakes. Pons definitely presents some match up problems. He had some really encouraging games last year and then teams figured out his limits and that was that. It looks like he’s addressed somethings so it’s really encouraging. I just know how different league play is than the preseason.

The biggest change for Pons in my opinion is that the game seems to have slowed down for him. He has gotten some confidence and doesn't feel like he has to do something really quickly or really athletically to make the right play. Against Washington he made a bunch on short easy jumpers that was what the defense was giving him. Last year I think he would have tried to take it to the basket and dunk it or passed it out really quickly to a teammate. Congratulations to Pons for all his hard work and for Coach Barnes putting him in a position to succeed.

I think there will be a few bad games and some regression, but honestly if he continues impacting the game even at 75% of what he's done this early in the season (and heck, he may become even better throughout the season, who knows) then I chalk that one up for a major win.

If he keeps on blocking everybody like he has been I'm going to start calling him mini Mutombo. Hmm, what's no, no, no in French....
