Looking toward 2018 Class

I think the 18 class will be what we hoped the 17 class would be. We're off to a great start, Mays and Taylor look to be solid, but I think it's important to get a couple more of the highly regarded instate guys to commit early and actively recruit the out of state guys. I think that is one of the things that hurt the 17 class. I also think Butch realizes how important this class is to his future, that's why he's hired some of the guys he has.

Early momentum is always good. What stopped that momentum was (1) a 2016 season that didn't meet expectations and (2) some good ol' nasty recruiting residing about 1.5 hours SE of K-Town.

if butch can get this in state class rolling early, he'll shut the haters up. Myself included. He needed a big year last year, and just couldnt get any momentum going.

Man i got on my own nerves with the negativity in '17. Butch had the perfect in state class thrown his way and fumbled the ball. very frustrating.

All we lost in 2017 was Tee Higgins. We landed Trey Smith, Ty Chandler, and Maleik Gray. 2017 was top heavy. 2018 has more depth in terms of talent.

There will be around 12-14 four star recruits in-state for 2018. If we can land 10-12 of them we'll be in great shape to land a top 5 class.

The depth of the in-state class in 2018 is pretty amazing. The state of Tennessee has got:

4* DT: Greg Emerson, Brant Lawless, D'Andre Litaker

4* OT: Cade Mays, Max Wray, Maxwell Iyama, Will Lawrence

4* WR: Camron Johnson, Tykee Ogle-Kellogg, Justin Oden

4* ATH: Alontae Taylor, Gavin Schoenwald

4* DB: Brendon Harris, Jaylon King

4* RB: Master Teague

16 likely four star recruits. Only Wray has gone out of state. If Butch can land the rest we'll be well on out way to a top 5 class in 2018.

Time to close the borders and lockdown the state of Tennessee.

Two major factors for a great 2018 recruiting class:

Peer recruiting in state. Got a great start with Mays already committed and recruiting hard.

Product on the field next year.

I think three main issues bit him: 1. How the coaching soap opera especially with the S&C coach plaid out before the season start 2. He took too many 3 stars early in the recruiting process but most of all 3. As has been discussed but not just the two late losses but I believe the way UT won against teams like Appy State and Ohio caused some consternation with some of the bigger recruits that possibly the players weren't being coached well. Preston's and Hurd's departures probably gave the bad perception followed by the article by Haney at 247 on a toxic culture between players and coaches.

Hopefully, the news of new coaches and new assignments can change up the chemistry in a good way, and the team can overachieve in 2017. I think beating the Gators in Gainesville, Georgia or LSU at home, and winning soundly over the teams you're supposed to beat will ease some of the anxiety and doubt and get us back into the top 5-10 in recruiting. Possible to do I believe, but not in the environment we had in 2016. That toxic mixture will get us a new regime and back to the drawing board for the program. I'm believing for the best because I choose to be optimistic. That said, I WANT CHAMPIONSHIPS AGAIN!! GBO :rock2:

Hopefully we lock it up. Just land the top in state guys and this class will be on the verge of being elite

agreed. while we may have missed on some key guys in state this past cycle, it can be more than made up for with this crop.

it's really impressive how many 4*+ kids are in this cycle instate. and it looks like we're in the running, if not leading, for a good majority of them.

i know we will have to do well out of state, always have.

but you figure we're probably going to sign, what, 17-19 kids in 18.....10-12 could be in state, and all could be 4* or better....

this 18 cycle could be huge....

Why would we only sign 17-19? I expect a nearly full class.

We're losing 20+ seniors next year. Plus there will be some early entrants to the draft and obviously transfers.

No reason we won't be signing a full class once again.
