I agree with facets of both sides of this argument. Even for traditional powers, such as Tennessee, the opportunity to compete for and achieve an undefeated season, replete with conference and national championships, is comparatively rare and should be pursued with every fiber of our collective being. While I never want Tennessee to lose, the biggest possible prize is a national championship, and we still have a reasonable opportunity to make it into the playoff. Ideally, we want TCU to lose to Texas or Baylor and for the Ohio State-Michigan game to be a blowout one way or the other. Additionally, it would benefit our cause if Alabama hands Ole Miss a second loss.
Although this scenario is, needless to say, not ideal, Heupel has done an extraordinary job of restoring Tennessee to national prominence in what, by all accounts, was expected to be a long, laborious rebuild. Our depth still is not on par with Georgia's or Alabama's, so not being able to compete in the SEC championship game could turn out to be a minor casualty in the overall campaign. On a neutral field and with the opportunity to tweak his offensive strategy accordingly, I suspect that Josh would give Georgia stiffer competition in a national championship game, should it come to that. And that opportunity would be well beyond the wildest dreams of any realistic Tennessee fan, going into this season.
