If memory serves me, the 0-6 stretch of the season was under Majors before his heart attack or whatever, and the undefeated remainder of 5-0 was under Fulmer.

I think you're mixing up the 1988 season with the 1992 season. In '92 Fulmer won the first 4 games and then Majors suddenly showed back up and we proceeded to lost the next 3. 1988 was all Majors.

Yeah your right. But, didn't Fulmer then finish the 91 season going 5-0 and start the 92 season as you say.

:D No, Johnny coached through the end of the 1991 season and then had the heart attack before the 1992 season. Fulmer won the first few games of the 1992 season before Johnny came back. Then Johnny resigned after the Vanderbilt game and Fulmer coached the Hall of Fame Bowl.

Nevermind, I need to refresh my screen before posting.

Ah, the infamous 1988 season. I remember it very well. The first 5 games, the Vols defense played very poorly.

The season started very rough in Athens. The Bulldogs won 28-17, but also rushed for 414 yards. The Vols kept it close only because Jeff Francis passed for 354 yards. Reggie Cobb had 58 yds rushing and 82 yds receiving. For UGA, Hampton had 196 yds rushing, Worley had 144 yds rushing, and Henderson had 60 yds.

Then the unthinkable happened... Duke (coached by Steve Spurrier) upset the Vols in the home opener despite Reggie Cobb's 182 yds rushing. The Vols were down 31-7 entering the 4th quarter... scored 19 pts in the final frame but came up short, 31-26.

LSU kept the heat on by beating the Vols 34-9. Tommy Hodson threw for 246 yards while the Tigers also rushed for 257 yards. Cobb was held to 52 yds rushing. Francis passed for only 71 yds. This was the Tigers first win EVER in Knoxville.

Another blowout loss for the Vols as Auburn won 38-6 at Auburn. The score was 10-6 (Auburn leading) at halftime. However, 21 third quarter points did the Vols in. The Tigers rushed for 240 yards and passed for 220. Cobb started the game, but Keith Davis was the Vols' leading rusher with 21 yards.

Washington State invaded Knoxville to the tune of 52-24. Rosenbach passed for 352 while Broussard rushed for 133. As a team WSU had 233 rushing yards and 385 passing yards. Cobb started the game again, but Denson led the team with 55 yds rushing.

Majors then fired defensive coordinator Ken Donahue. The same Donahue that was praised for his defensive genious in previous seasons. Running backs coach Doug Matthews was switched to defensive coordinator right before the Alabama game.

The Vols played much better defensively. The Tide only had 299 total yards of offense. The score entering the 4th quarter was Alabama leading 14-12. Alabama scored twice in the 4th quarter, however, and the Vols scored the final touchdown to pull within the final score 28-20. Vol linebacker Keith Delong made 19 unassisted tackles, intercepted a pass, 1 sack, and had a tackle for a loss. DeLong was named SEC "Defensive Player of the Week". Reggie Cobb was the Vols leading rusher, with 47 yds on 23 carries.

The Vols went on to win their final 5 games....

Vols 38, Memphis State 25 -- Thompson leads Vols with 124 yds rushing
Vols 10, Boston College 7 -- Thompson leads Vols with 58 yds rushing
Vols 20, Ole Miss 12 -- Cobb leads Vols with 111 yds rushing
Vols 28, Kentucky 24 -- Amsler leads Vols with 121 yds rushing
Vols 14, Vanderbilt 7 -- K.Davis leads Vols with 162 yds rushing

For the season, Cobb led the Vols in rushing with 547 yds (4.6 avg), Thompson had 199 yds (4.4), K.Davis had 287 yds (4.8), and Amsler had 213 yds (3.4). Jeff Francis passed for 2237 yds, 13 TDs, 11 ints. TD Woods had 689 yds receiving and Harper had 487 yds. Keith DeLong finished the season with 159 tackles, 2 int, and 2 sacks... and 18 'big plays'.
