I'm pretty sure Kim thinks who you play in non conference has zero effect on the outcome of the real season. So why risk anything at all. Typical of her, she has zero efffs left to give about the effect of such a sh*tty sched on her players, the fans, or the game at large. It will not work for her like last yr
The media and the NCAA proved last season it has 0 effect. LSU will more than likely go into the conference schedule with a 16 and 0 record. They will certainly be ranked in the top five in the country and top ten in the NET. No one will even notice the schedule they played except a now and then media person trying to draw attention. All most will notice including most of the media, the polls, and NCAA will be the won lost record. I have been advocating for Tennessee to go that route you build a resume of wins where probably even an 8 and 8 conference record will get you in. If you go 12 and 4 you are a top four seed easily. The season really starts in the post season anyway. Winning a conference title or tourney title gives you a little prestige, but the big one is getting in the NCAA tourney and progressing to a final four. Records in regular season don't matter then and in the current system do not penalize you at all.I'm pretty sure Kim thinks who you play in non conference has zero effect on the outcome of the real season. I wouldn't renew my season tickets if the LVs played NC schedules like LSU's. Thats a big chunk of the home games. I want a chance to see a few of the top players and teams not in the SEC. I want a few non conf games to at least be competitive. I'm not coming out on a rainy Nov night to see Knoxville Heating and Welding Tech School play. The media and the NCAA proved last season it has 0 effect. The reason I was always so happy with the way Pat typically scheduled is because I was always very competitive back in the day, and it’s hard to beat the excitement of game day when you know you’re about to face a top opponent who will take you to your limits.
If I were a top player at LSU today, seeing that schedule would definitely have been extremely disappointing. Yes, obviously the conference schedule will give them plenty of challenges, and hopefully that will be enough for them… but there’s something special about going against the titans of other conferences.
Maybe the LSU players aren’t like I was. I find it hard to believe that Hailey Van Lith isn’t secretly disappointed, though. I absolutely love that kid’s competitiveness!
But like others said, it probably won’t matter as far as their seeding in the post-season goes, but dang. Those poor fans paying to see them beat everyone by 60. Boring as hell.
Doubt they would set it up that way.I agree... I don't think it'll punish them too harshly but i could see that being the difference between a 1 or 2 seed if they don't win enough key games in the non-conference. I'd actually love a uconn/lsu match up in the elite 8 with a final 4 on the line. That would be a huge draw.
Some players who value ME! over all else probably like the stat padding. And the chance to perfect the staredowns, dances, etc. Growing the game you know.If I were a top player at LSU today, seeing that schedule would definitely have been extremely disappointing. I feel Reese is cool with stat padding and doing minimal work. I think she is in a major rude awakening with mulkey if she looks I’ll prepared this year given the off-season. Mulkey won’t be afraid to bite and give it to Angel and I don’t think she will handle it well..Some players who value ME! over all else probably like the stat padding. OR, this could all be us wishcasting and actually they've all been working their tails off this summer (after Mexico) and will be sharp as a tack come SEC play. HVL I think has to be the most disappointed out of all of them. She is ultra competitive and even with her up and downs she clearly enjoys a challenge and that’s what will make her better.
Morrow is just along for the ride given DePaul hasn’t been relevant in a while but I think even she has to be disappointed.
I’m just trying to understand the point of assembling transfers and recruits of this caliber to play this. I looked back at Baylor schedules and while awful they usually had 5 or so teams with a pulse in ooc. This ooc and last, out of a combined 30 ish games lsu will only play 2 ranked teams and face a total of 4 P5 teams. That is ridiculous.
Every fanbase is different based on the LSU schedule last season they seemed to love the non conference and winning by 50. I agree not that fun to watch after a while. Of course last year was the first time LSU had won anything in women's basketball in a while. We'll see how it plays out this year and if they still can draw the big crowds.I wouldn't renew my season tickets if the LVs played NC schedules like LSU's. Thats a big chunk of the home games. Also, as a longtime LV fan, I'd be really disappointed if they punted Pat's legacy of growing the game. How ironic (and sad) that LSU claims their bad sportsmanship in the tourney was all in the interest of "growing the game", but refuses to participate in marque games (such as UConn in the Caymans) that would actually help do so. Vintage Kim.
As far as SOS meaning nothing to seedings, it definitely didn't last year. But those committees are known to overcorrect when obviously out of line. IMO maintaining a reasonably challenging, fan friendly, game-building non conf sched is not all that hard and the KJH did a really good job of it for the upcoming season. Now she's just got to win that schedule.
Hey. If it sells down there, good on them. It may sell in Knoxville. Most fans are not purists.Every fanbase is different based on the LSU schedule last season they seemed to love the non conference and winning by 50. I agree not that fun to watch after a while. I think winning sells anywhere no matter who you are beating especially after the number gets in double digits and the media and coaches are ranking you a top five team. It doesn't matter if it is Mississippi Valley St most fans still look at the bottom line wins and rankings. I fall into the non purist especially for the non conference schedule I think you get plenty of competiion when that schedule comes around. I can take the wins by 50 and let those bench players get a lot of playing time they won't get when the conference season starts. I really like the Tennessee lighter non conference schedule this season.Hey. If it sells down there, good on them. It may sell in Knoxville. Most fans are not purists.
My observation is that LV attendance, esp in the NC season, is very dependant on who the competition is. Attendance for EKU will be paltry, while Notre Dame and Ohio State will have good crowds. It's that way for me, I don't put forth a big effort for the cupcake games.Hey. If it sells down there, good on them. It may sell in Knoxville. Most fans are not purists.
