LSU OC to NC...talk on radio

I don't know if I consider Mauck developed. LSU's defense brought that title home. If I remember correctly Mauck didn't look all that sharp in that contest.

Fisher left Auburn after the 1998 season. Also, which one of them has coordinated a National Champion?

Is Trent Dilfer better than Dan Marino?

Is Gino Toretta better than Joe Montana?

Is Randy Sanders better than David Cutcliffe?

With regard to 2004 and AUB's "exceptional talent," that is true. They were talented. But many teams have been that talented and had nowhere near the efficiency they played with.

I'll choose to look at Fisher's body of work and make my own estimation. And that estimation is that he's just OK. I'd rather have Borges any day of the week.

Moreover, it isn't Borge's fault that AUB didn't win it in 2004. They went undefeated. I believe they would have beaten that LSU team.

Is Bill Parcells better than Chuck Knox?
Is Pat Riley better than Don Nelson?
Is Bob Knight better than Dale Brown?

The answer to all of those questions is yes. Coaches, even more than players, are judged by championships. That's how it is and how it should be.

Name another team in recent history that had two running backs taken in the top 10 and a first round QB in the same backfield.

Dunno...Leinart, Bush, and White were pretty good.

Peyton, Jamal, Henry, and Bryson are pretty good.

Dorsey, McGahee, et al were pretty good.

Young Benson et al were pretty good.

Mirer Bettis and Waters

This is pointless. Auburn was, IMO, one of the slickest offenses I've seen in a while. And yes they were talented, but no more than a lot of other good teams have been. I don't put Ronnie Brown on the same pedestal that some do, and he's certainly no Cadillac.

That can be true, but a lot has to happen to win it all. And it also isn't fair to make that assessment until a long or finished career has taken place.

Do you think Bill Parcells would have won a NC at Vandy?

Also, you can't punish Borges/AUB and whoever for not winning it in 2004. They have every right to claim it that USC does.

1. The bizarre thing is, Parcells almost became the coach at Vandy. If Knight hadn't talked some sense into him, he might have ruined his career right there.
2. No, they don't. The system their conference signed up for says SC was the National Champ. End of story.

2. It might be the end in your mind, but since there is no playoff it's your opinion versus anyone else's. And the "system" can say whatever it wishes. There is no NCAA champion, but there is a BCS champion. And I don't really care unless it's reasonably clear cut.

If Parcells has stayed at Vandy, would he have been a worse coach? I doubt he would have won it all there. But I wouldn't punish him for having less resources than others he'd be playing against.

No, it would be pretty much a consensus that USC is the National Champion for 2004. If Auburn doesn't like it, they can leave the SEC. Then, they could spend more Saturdays playing the Citadel. You lose the ability to dispute a championship when you sign on to the system. Auburn knew the rules. They chose to play that putrid nonconference schedule. They got exactly what they deserved.

Again, it doesn't matter how many times you say it or who you think agrees with you. In fact I might think USC is better. But it doesn't matter. They didn't play each other. And even if there were a 100% consensus -- which there is not -- it wouldn't "make" anything because you don't have an undisputed anything when the word POLL is involved.

Moreover, they had no chance but the sign the conference agreement. You created a straw man and you know it.

Not true. Miami and VA Tech didn't like the direction the Big East was moving. Did they just go along? No, they moved on. I'm sure the Sun Belt would be thrilled to have Auburn.
