That’s a remarkable advance in astronautical engineering! Being able to travel from Earth orbit to lunar orbit, AND then land - that’s a lot of different things going on in a relatively tiny spacecraft.
Getting back to earth was always going to be the hard part, which this thing doesn't have to do. Apollo could have done without the lunar orbiter "command module" but it would have been a lot harder. The command module was capable of re-entry and so that problem was isolated to that one piece of the machinery. That's about all it could actually do. You create all the rendezvous problems by having two spacecraft, but overall easier.
