I watched a lot of Olympic volleyball this past summer--including almost all of the games played by the U.S. women who won the Gold Medal--and I've learned that it's hard to watch college volleyball after watching the best international/national teams play. Let's just say there's a notable drop-off in quality! I've watched portions of a few UT matches this season (on the SEC network), especially because we were ranked around 20th for a while--and I've frankly been disappointed. Granted, my sample size is small, but the team has never looked very good when I've seen them play--a lot of mistakes, a poor hitting percentage, serve and return errors, etc. Rackham Watt came in and immediately improved the team, but I wonder if we've plateaued with her: it's been pretty status quo--decent/above average team but not demonstrably good--the last 2/3 years. It's really a matter of ratcheting up the recruiting another level or two, as coaching can only take you so far. Here's hoping....
