Mac McClung

Teams take players based on talent and potential. I judge them by the results. I can see why teams want him. I wanted him out of HS. The talent is there but the kid has no idea how to use his talent to make his team better. I've seen enough to reasonably conclude he's not gonna fix this in college.
Isn’t that what coaching is for?

Game 1 starter as a freshman at Georgetown. Scored double figures both years so he was a Quality starter. This year: No 1 scorer for the 14th rated team in the country who just lost by 1 to the 6th rated team in the country in which he scored 21 points.
He sucks ? You are FOS. What’s he got to do to not suck in your eyes? Be an All-American and 1st round NBA pick? He is a good , quality player who has the ability and work ethic for possible development into a better player. Obviously you have some type of bias against the kid.

Your are probably right. I know very little about UT basketball but from what I have picked up on is they have a lot of talent and guards in the 6’4 to 6’7 range which is probably what prevents McClung from being a sure bet for the NBA since he is closer to 6’1.

McClung won’t come within 100 miles of the NBA. He plays zero defense and is icy hot on the offensive side.

He’s a solid college player, but his destiny is Euro-ball if he wants to play professionally.

The zero defense is a fake rumor. He gets quite a few steals. He size is a disadvantage against bigger, stronger guards. Look at my posts, did I state he was going to make it to the NBA. He is athletic enough, can create his own shot off the dribble but his HS coach and Mac should have had him working the point at least from his junior year forward.

In that L to Kansas, 1 assist and 2 turnovers.
...and ?

Season Avgs: 27.6 minutes
Points 15.0
Rebounds 2.3
Assists. 2.9
Turnovers 1.1
FG Att: 11.1
FG %. 38.0
FT %. 85.0
FT Att: 5.9
Looks like the Assists to TO ratio is pretty good.
15 pts per game on 11 attempts per game. That looks like a pretty good ratio but I’m not real familiar what a good ratio is on that. I will find out.

He averages:
2.4 assists
1.8 to’s

While shooting the ball every 2 mins 14 seconds of his career.

hitting about 39% of those including about 30% of his 3’s

what’s not to like?

In perspective......so far the player for Tennessee who has shot the ball the most, has shot the ball about every 2 minutes and 40 seconds...........but he has hit 50% of those.

Last year it was Bowden. He only shot the ball for 38%.........but he only shot the ball every 3 minutes.

Mac may be a great person.....I don’t know. He is a really good ball player.......but nothing unlike most teams don’t have on their roster.....and probably plenty of.
He would have been a terrible fit at Tennessee.

Let’s see how the stats wind up at the end of the year. 11 shots a game is certainly not a ball hog statistic and the stats I saw show 2.9 assists and 1.1 turnovers a game which I believe a decent A/To ratio.

11 shots a game is more than anyone on our team takes, 4.8 attempts from deep is more than anyone on our team takes, 31% from deep is worse than what our starting guards shoot...all while not really playing defense, no thanks.

Someone stated he is a ball hog. 11 shots a game is not a ball hog. 20 shots a game would be.

Led his team (2 different ones) in FGA all 3 years he’s played, he’s a volume shooter, point blank. Again I’m not bashing him as a player, he fits a system though (like an Auburn), that isn’t Tennessee’s style.

No one is arguing about his fit at TN.

I do not believe he led Georgetown in FG attempts in either year. The other freshman guard in McClung’s freshman year was the true definition of a ball hog and I believe the Transfer Center last year led the team in attempts In Mac’s sophomore year.

The first 2 posts bumping this thread were literally posters saying they wanted him here, one even saying they’d trade him for Vescovi.

He missed games, but FGAPG he has led his team all 3 years.

Listen, I’m sure your defense of Mac means a lot to him, but no one here is actually knocking the kid or saying bad things about him, we’re just simply using statistics to showcase that he is not a good fit at Tennessee nor is he as elite as some people try and say.

I live in Georgetown. I got to see him play for two years. He’s a fine player but he without a doubt is a ball hog. He is a volume shooter, as BTO stated. I would watch him play at GTown and he frequently looked to shoot first pass later.

I think he is a solid player for Texas Tech. They lost a ton and needed to replace some people. But Mac is still living more on his dunk highlight reels more than anything. People just want him to be more than he is which is a serviceable guard that will make some big shots but shoot you out of a game too.
