After last year I'm happy with any win, but a very fine Gator team is coming to town. Here is my take on tonite's performance:

1) Chavis evidently didn't have a clue on how to stop the triple option or make adjustments at halftime that were needed. (I personally like Coach Chavis and to critisize him around here is like spitting on the Pope.) It reminds me of the South Carolina game last year when he was unable to make the simple adjustments to stop the quick slant pass over the middle that killed us.

The obvious retort from the the coaches will be that we don't see that offense and it's hard to prepare for in a week etc. I looked at the out of conference teams that AF played last year and how many points that thay gave up to the Flex Bone: Washington 20, Navy 24, Army 24. I have to believe we have better talent than those teams.

2) My second concern is our inability to sucessfully run the ball. Neither this game, nor the Cal game, did we produce a running back with over 100 yards. We only had a team total of 79 yards tonite. History tells us that in the Florida game that the team that runs the ball best wins.

3) Injuries. We can ill afford to lose DB's and DL's. Hopefully things are not as bad as it sounds.

The good news is that we have a very good QB, receivers and offensive coordinator. I think we will play hard next week but will need some serious breaks to pull out a win against UF.

all of those are legit concerns. i think the injuries are relatively minor except for inky's. we defnitely need to take our running game to the next level. we're not getting stuffed every play but we definitely need to step that up to beat florida. we can't have ainge throwing 40 passes a game.

Missed tackles are a big concern after this game. An option attack neutralizes speed and blitzing. I expected the corners to come up a little more than they did today.

The coaches are still wary of Hardesty's durability. 17 carries is as many as he needs to see. The running game will come along, but to expect a big rushing game against a team that practices against the triple option may not be realistic. If the vols put 30 points on the board, they will be fine.

Injuries are always a concern, especially on the D line.

That's the weird thing. It doesn't seem like we are running it all that well, but at the same time, it's not as if we are losing the battle at the line of scrimmage.

Foster looked a little tenative from the start. I wonder if he was already hurting before the game? Coker will need to have some quality carries before the year is up.

I thought the same thing. He didn't look nearly as quick as Hardesty.

We averaged 2.5 yards per carry? Stats say Ainge had 3 carries for -15? I took those out, it seemed weird.

Anyway, minus the Ainge carries, we had a 3.4 yards/carry average. Not very good.

Again, those 15 and 20 yard runs that tend to help these averages are very difficult to get against a team that practices against the triple option every day. That was a disciplined football team.

1. our defense isnt one that adjusts at halftime. we have a gameplan and stick with it.

2. florida cant run the ball either. we have 3 talented backs and apparently they havent found a guy they like.

3. Who is injured besides Inky? I think we can manage without him.

Don't Navy and Army run the option? Seeing it in practice every day gives you an advantage in stopping it i guess.

Justin Harrell left very early with an elbow injury. Ramon Foster left with an ankle. Arian, too. They COULD be important players. :p

...which reminds me . . . What the heck were we doing on those last two snaps? AF was out of timeouts. Why didn't we just get in the Victory formation and take a knee?

That was ridiculous.

The Harrell and Foster injuries didnt sound all that bad. Did they just not want to risk making the injuries worse? I dont know much about the Ramon Foster injury other than he had to go to the locker room. Florida lost two of its linemen before the season started, I believe.

You'd think the way we've been passing that the LB's and safeties on the other team would back off the line and we could break smome long runs.

Yeah, UF did lose a couple guys, and they were kind of inexperienced there anyway.

As for our injuries. Anytime you have a key player leave early and not return, you should be a little worried.

All the injured players play huge roles. Arian obviously doesnt need explanation, but I think if worse came to worse, Hardesty can fill in. Harrell is a huge guy and fills up holes easily. He also is our playmaking leader in the front 7. I think he should be ready though. Ramon Foster is a starter on the already thin O-Line. We will need him vs Florida. Inky could be a huge loss or gain. Loss because we lose one tough corner who is not afriad of contact. However, all you guys who wanted to see D-Mo at corner....Heres your shot.

The coach at Army I think(?) is Bobby Ross and if he is running the wishbone it would be the first time in his long and sucessful career. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think Bobby Ross is running the bone at Army. Navy probably runs the best triple option attack in the country.

When Hardesty quit trying to "jitterbug" his way out of the backfield, and just ran, he did much better. He basically tackled himself a couple of times, and he tripped over the feet of linemen a couple of others.

Where was Coker? He ran VERY well last week, but I didn't see him tonight.

I know that people might not want to read this, but it IS the truth. We were the first game that AF played, and they had all year to get ready for us. To say that we needed to adjust better is true, but you must remember, we just don't play teams that run this type of offense. I mean, almost NEVER. We have so MANY things to get ready for, that we can only do so many things. This type of offense is easier to work against when you know you'll see it every year.

Injuries COULD be a huge factor, but they are beyond any coach's control during a game. The offense looked even better than last week, and Ainge looks as if he has complete control of the field.

We also had a bit of "looking ahead 'til next week" syndrome, and we might not have been as focused as we should have been - particularly our defense, but we all know how powerful our D usually is, so I'm not really all that concerned.

I think next week will turn out to be a really hard fought "slug-fest," that we will win, but it could be a close one.

GO VOLS!

GA, whatever happened to Tim Stowers? I know Johnson is at Navy now.

I believe Fulmer felt like we needed to burn a few more seconds off the clock; even with the new "clock stoppage rules" for this year, had we taken 3 knees, we may have had to punt it to them with 2 seconds left or something, and I don't think Fulmer wanted to take ANY chances with that.

(personally, I like our chances better pooch punting with maximum coverage and taking the very, very minimal risk of a runback for a TD as opposed to risking Ainge fumbling trying to burn clock, but hey, it worked!)

PS, If nobody didn't notice, talking about Ainge"s splendid night, Ole Miss got clobbered by Missou and Shaeffer had three INT's and only about 70 yards passing. So I guess we may have got the better of the deal....we got David Cut and the Rebs got Brent.

if Brent had Cut, he probably wouldnt have thrown 3 interceptions.
