Major Concerns For Next Game (Florida)

GA, whatever happened to Tim Stowers? I know Johnson is at Navy now.

Stowers found out that you don't want to be the guy that follows the legend. He's actually the head coach at Rhode Island now. I think he's actually been pretty successful.

He never was really that bad at GSU, it's just that he was the Georgia Southern version of Ron Zook . . . following a legend.

After last year I'm happy with any win, but a very fine Gator team is coming to town. Here is my take on tonite's performance:

Last year's team would have lost this game by 3 touchdowns, so I'm pleased with the progress as well.

1) Chavis evidently didn't have a clue on how to stop the triple option or make adjustments at halftime that were needed. (I personally like Coach Chavis and to critisize him around here is like spitting on the Pope.) It reminds me of the South Carolina game last year when he was unable to make the simple adjustments to stop the quick slant pass over the middle that killed us.

It's hard to stop that option when they run as well as Air Force did. I was really impressed with them. They were a well oiled machine and took away our speed and blitzing packages. We'll be fine against UF. If anything, the UF players will look much slower than Air Force.

The obvious retort from the the coaches will be that we don't see that offense and it's hard to prepare for in a week etc. I looked at the out of conference teams that AF played last year and how many points that thay gave up to the Flex Bone: Washington 20, Navy 24, Army 24. I have to believe we have better talent than those teams.

Different things happen on different nights. Air Force was just "on" tonight when it came offense. The Vols won, so I don't think the coaches really even owe us a retort on this one.

2) My second concern is our inability to sucessfully run the ball. Neither this game, nor the Cal game, did we produce a running back with over 100 yards. We only had a team total of 79 yards tonite. History tells us that in the Florida game that the team that runs the ball best wins.

We would have rushed for over 100 easy if we could have gotten the ball a little more. That Air Force offense just ate up the clock. I'd say we only had the ball for 2 or 3 minutes in the 4th. Besides, Ainge was killing that Air Force defense tonight. Why run when when you can pass the ball like he was. I thought Hardesty looked good tonight .

3) Injuries. We can ill afford to lose DB's and DL's. Hopefully things are not as bad as it sounds.

Definitely had some concerns with that tonight.

The good news is that we have a very good QB, receivers and offensive coordinator. I think we will play hard next week but will need some serious breaks to pull out a win against UF.
very good concerns and yes were better then them teams but, these teams ARE USED TO SEEING THIS OFFENSE, dont they play army,navy....every year......we shouldnt be worried with fl coming to town, all that happened was we were suprised at that annoying offense.....Fl is something we have seen before and PLUS our defense will be pissed after watching this pathetic display of DEFENSE and take it out on the gators......... dont worry, THE PHIL has got it under control

Crazy as it sounds, our Secondary scares me. Big plays given up to Cal and Air Force did as they pleased. Plus Fellows and now Inky.

Yes, we are getting alittle thin at the DB but Im not panicking yet. Air Force only had succes because the DB's were practically lined up as LB's becuase of the heavy run game.

Vol423 - You seem to have the same answer for everything, and that is just "poor coaching"

A coach cannot go out onto the field and play for the defense, or the offense, or the special teams. These kids didn't just get dropped out of the sky and onto lower Hudson field, you know. They've all played before, albeit not at this level. They MUST accept responsibility for their spot on the field, and not just look good on the media guide.

You can coach and show them what to do, and drill, drill, drill, but THEY have to do it. The defense didn't play like it should have last night - that's plain to see, but to start whining about coaching ALREADY?!?!

Also - and I said this last night - They had ALL YEAR to get ready for us, as we were THEIR first game. They had lots of time to put new wrinkles into their well-oiled option attack that we don't usually get to see, and they got to see film of US from last week. They ran that offense VERY well, and we didn't respond as we should have.

In a perfect world, we would hold EVERY team we play to less than 100 yds rushing, but that just ISN'T practical, and I would bet you that we don't play defense like that again this year.

Let's just hope that they're ready for Florida

I am usually ready to dog pile on this coaching staff, but Air force had 4 returning O-linemen that are seniors. Justin Harrell was also out for most of the second half. I will wait until after the Fla game to hit the poor coaching button. I think this D will bounce back with authority.

Not sure if anyone else has posted on this, however, your post seems more than misguided. First, if Ainge does not make that one bad throw, AF loses 38-17 (maybe 38-24.) Instead, they take that and the momentum and score. Then they recover the onside kick. If we would have recovered, it would have been over, again they only would have scored 24 points.

Also, Army and Navy run the option. Therefore, their defenses are pretty solid on defending the option. I honestly do not believe that our defense actually practiced all that much against the option this week. Chavis most likely understood that AF would not be able to stop our offense (they weren't) and that if it led to a shootout, we would win (we did.) Knowing how important the Florida game is and that they run the same offense as Cal, it makes sense to continue to focus on the spread.

A win is a win, and we are 2-0.

Concerns:

1. Our injuries

2. Backs need to quick runninng E/W and a little more N/S. They passed up several holes to go wide. I think they were trying to "break outside for the proverbial big one".

3. Special teams are still an important part of football.

4. Our corner backs

Even if they did practice against a scout option team there is no way for a scout team to replicate AF's performance. This was just an unlucky break in the schedule for the Vols.

If they DIDN'T practice against the option last week they should all be dismissed. You have to play one game at a time. Had it not been for our effecient offense we would have lost the game.

Air Force will play Nortre Dame on Nov. 11. We will see how great their triple option is then. Players don't stop the triple option but coaching schemes do. I remember years ago when Texas under Darryl Royal had an "unstoppable" wishbone but when they played the Irish under Ara Parsegian in a New Years Bowl, ND lined up their three linebacker in a mirrow image formation of Texas's 'bone and shut down the great Longhorn juggernault. (albeit they had 3 weeks to prepare).

You cannot overlook the discipline needed to play against the option attack. Those assignments are hard on a young defense and were not performed well at all. As I stated in another post it would have helped to get tape of Air Force this year. ND will have that advantage. That being said, ND might hang 50 on that defense.

You should add that ND also had no HUGE GAMES on the horizon either.

You coach to win. Air Force had a lot of breaks that allowed them to make it that close. A win is a win, and I am happy with it. The whole, take one game at a time mindset is ridiculous. Every one of the coaches at UT should be more willing to lose to Air Force (a non conference game) than to Florida (conference and division rival) every year.

I think you are right. Our speedy attacking defense worked to our detriment against AF. I worry that the reported "offensive genius" Meyer will have some wrinkle in his game plan (such as putting Tebow in the backfield along with Leak) that we haven't seen yet and Chavis will not be able to make the adjustments needed once the game begins.

I think we would have hung 45 on AF had Ainge not thrown the INT.

I think Chavis has more than proven his worth as a Defensive Coordinator.

For the first time in a long time, our offense had to carry us instead of our defense. That's just the way it goes sometimes. This doesn't mean that Chavis is any less of a coach than he was the week before. He can only do so much.

People are overlooking Fla's young offensive line that has not been tested. I was able to watch most of the Fla game, and though they blew UCF out, they performed like a frustrated offense for the first few series. Their defense is STOUT.

The Cal game will be very beneficial in the preparation for the Fla game.

It will be interesting, I don't think that our defensive line is very good yet..

It is time for Mapu, Bolden and Fisher to step up. Having Harrell absent for most of the second half was no help to the young DL.

I worried myself sick about this game from the moment I saw Air Force on our schedule. Their offence is tailor made for neutralizing the type of defense Chavis has installed as well as the speed that the Vols field. The first essential when facing Air Force's bone is to "READ" then "REACT." I've hear "Aggressive" and "Attack" from Chavis hundreds of times. Not once have I heard him talk about the positives of a defense that "READS." He simply doesn't believe in it. For some reason he is comfortable with the idea of "live by the sword and die by the sword." He has come to terms with this and is very philosophically comfortable with it.

As for our running game, it is there. When our backs learn to hit a hole and be happy with what is there instead of trying break free for a rush to the end zone each and every single time, I believe we will have a consistent 100 yard rusher.

The scare experienced in this game should be looked at as a mixed blessing in disguise. After the unbelievable ease of the Cal game, a squeaker like this reminds the team that they are mortal and can indeed be defeated. Now that Air Force is gone and we got the big "W," I very much appreciate the contribution they made to our season. When all is said and done, I honestly believe many will look back to this game and deem it as the one where a lot of boys turned into men.

Hope you guys are right but I have to think Florida will score at least 24 points on us. Hopefully we score 25 or more.:crossfingers:
