Beltway I was just pointing out the "based on facts I happen to know". There are always two sides to every story.

I'm glad I didn't get sucked into this one like I said a couple of pages back. Anyway, my final post on the matter is this: the Majors situation could have been handled better and Majors himself could have also handled it better.

Again, all I am saying is that I hate is has to be this way becuase he was a Tennessee legend.

I tend to agree with volfreak.

Retire the jersey, not the number.

Yeah Majors was kind of done wrong.  The program had really started to turn around and Majors was finally getting some top recruits in here when he got canned.

Thats really is the reason why Fulmer has such a great win-loss record and has recruited so well, he was building on what Majors had been doing.  But Fulmer is a better coach then Majors.

Majors was head coach for 16 years and was starting to get some top recruits? Even Battle had a better winning percentage than Majors.

And yes, the first family of Tennessee football is spelled MAJORS, but that didn't put clothes on the emperor.

Beltway,
were your inside sources that told you about the Majors/Fulmer ordeal the same ones that told you Clausen was going to be named as the starting QB. Sorry bro, but you've been wrong twice now.

I wish somebody would explain to me how CPF "took" the job from Majors. How did he "TAKE" it? He beat UF and UGA and had the VOLS 3-0, before majors screwed up the 1992 season by losing 3 that season (including our only loss to USC, our embarassing loss to ARkansas and Majors usual loss to Bama).

Let me also reiterate that it was MAJORS HIMSELF, who placed CPF in the position of ASSISTANT COACH, one to fill in for Majors should he not be able to coach. CPF did his job. He coached us to wins. I dont know how the rest of 1992 would have ended up if PF were to coach the whole season, but we DO know how it ended with Majors at the helm.

Peyton's Jersey has already been retired. It basically just means there is a big ceremony where Peyton is presented a framed version of his jersey and then the University could display copy somewhere. It would mean the number could keep being used, and it would have left the 4 WW2 vicitms as the only numbers "retired".

Ok so there's ceremony attached to it.

The reason I ask, it seems to me that if the number is still in use, when a player graduates or leaves the university then their specific jersey is retired. That would be true for every player.
I wouldn't expect Jim Bob Cooter to run out on the field wearing a jersey with T. Martin written on the back.
