I blame the Barbasol and Burma shave folks for not keeping me in their employ. Remember gems like:

DINAH DOESN'T
TREAT HIM RIGHT
BUT IF HE'D SHAVE
DINAH-MITE!

Burma Shave

Shaving brushes
You'll soon see 'em
On a shelf
In some museum
Burma Shave

My job is
Keeping faces clean
And nobody knows
De stubble
I've seen

As a Vol alumni, I hold my Alma Mater to a higher standard than allowing something classless like that to happen, you honor your commitments. Maybe some kids are told they arent tops on the depth chart, but you dont back out of your obligations. Im sorry your wife had that experience, thats awful, dishonest and lacks honor and those are all the reasons why that wont fly at UT.

It's been going on and will most likely continue. Nash Nance ring a bell?

That phrase "honor your commitments" resonates with me.

BUT... so also would the phrase "you have to make the team each year." There are only so many spots, and you have to be good enough each season. Stated that way, it's tough, but reasonable.

Of course it works fine in high school where you can prove yourself and earn that spot in August. But the hard (life is seldom fair) reality is that decisions have to be made much earlier in college, and coaches have to compare your past performance against their hopes and expectations for new recruits.

I imagine many of those decisions are concluded with the phrase "bigger up-side."

So am I still stupid for calling that this would happen?

Nah just for engaging in necromancy and acting like you're the only one aware that attrition happens while begging for recognition. One can forgive the necromancy (some threads deserve to be revisited, especially with new information) but necromancy to toot your own horn? Well that's kinda a bad trait to have. IOW, you're trying too hard.

Say "I was right!" to yourself not to others and you'll do far better and receive a lot less snark.

Honor you commitments? Or you're advocating a double standard?

It's OK when a kid is recruited over and told to hit the road jack, and don't come back no more?

Honor you commitments? Or you're advocating a double standard?

It's Ok to pull a kid's scholarship because you want to go after or make room for a big name recruit at some position of need (or want)?

Honor you commitments? Or you're advocating a double standard?

"Hey, kid! You're technically fired. No fault of your own. You've been great. It's a business decision, understand?"

Honor you commitments? Or you're advocating a double standard?

So basically, the school can install a boot print on a kid's rear end but the kid isn't allowed to so much as decide which azz cheek gets the print?

BruiseVol, thanky, I've been educated of to the proper order of what commitment means.

Cut 'em loose. And knock off the holier than thou nonsense. A scholarship is a 1 year commitment, not a 4 year commitment. Its free education/ life for that year. These are guys who can go to 200 other cities/schools in the United States and get the same setup. Millions of dollars being poured into the program. Make room for the winners.

That should also apply when a kid on their own wants to leave. But if Honor you commitments is going to be thrown at them, it should apply to the university too.

This!

All these morons that are waiving the "scholarships are 1 year commitment" flag need to put themselves in the shoes of the players or their parents when they're being recruited.

Can you see this scenario....

Mom & Dad: "Coach, we like you and we like what UT has to offer academically so we're comfortable sending our son to UT for the next 4 years to play football and get a degree."

Coach: "That's great! But hold your horses on this 4 year thing. If it turns out your son isn't very good and we can over-recruit him next year, then we'll have to make some adjustments and maybe not re-new his scolarship."

Yeah, that would over like a turd in a punchbowl.

So am I still stupid for calling that this would happen? Jaron Toney, Alden Hill, possibly Pig Howard. Which I feel that Pig has done it to himself. I bet we will hear a few more names in the next couple weeks.

No one called you stupid. In fact, I just browsed the thread and not only has no one called you stupid, you've almost been completely ignored. You've been quoted a couple of times, but not in a mocking way.

What the F are you talking about?

I hate it when I get too much SNARK!! I need to do far better.
p.s. I had to look it up.

out with the bad and in with the good. Butch is bringing in some really good talent. If kids cant get better each year, and allow a freshman to pass them on the roster, they should be sent home. They get a scholarship to live up to the standards of the football program. If they don't, send em home. Marlin Lane has no problem living up to the talent, but i gotta a feeling that some of the DBs, that have been burnt their whole college career, will be sent home. Jones has a job to win, and that means putting the best players on the field. His job will be on the line every year until he turns things around. Players that have been in the program for 2, 3, or 4 years should always be a few steps ahead of freshman coming in. this type of stuff happens when your recruiting is really good. it sucks for the player, but we do want to win.

I think it stinks, but honestly fball is worth several million dollars, and winning fball is worth even more. So its the nasty business side.

A lot of folks were saying they couldn't see UT doing this. Like UT is different from any other major college. It happens everywhere. Unfortunately its mostly kids that got recruited over.

Everyone keeps asking how they are going to make the room on an 85 man roster. That is pretty simple. Scholarships are yearly contracts. Doubtful you see him skip any guys that will be seniors schollies. Although I would expect to see the Juniors get hit. This same thing happened with my wife when she played softball for UGA. A new coach came in and did not renew the scholarships for 9 players.

It is something none of us should want to happen. However, many things like poor academics, injury, lack of discipline, and sometimes poor attitude leads to attrition. We can speculate all we want, and bemoan a feeling of unfairness in the process, but very few of us are there to learn the true reasons why a player leaves early. Oh sure, they always release statements, but that says very little. We may never know the exact reasons and circumstances, but I don't need to know. It's football, not an episode of a soap opera.

That is why I neither praise nor condemn the coaches when this kind of thing happens. I just hope that they do what is best for the program and the players. And no matter why they leave, I wish them well, and appreciate that they chose to represent the Vols.

It is just a dose of reality. If you sign on with a company and do not perform, your services will no longer be required. If an academic scholarship is awarded and the student is required to maintain a 3.2 grade average and only performs to 3.0, he or she loses the scholarship.

It is the way life is and part of developing responsible adults is to teach the hard things.

That why none of these all-knowing self-righteous posters whose chests house fragments of an anthracite fossil instead of an organic cardiac pump are not our coaches.

It's my opinion that it is probably mutual. These kids know they have no prayer in seeing the field so agreement is mutual. I can also see alot of it being not keeping grades up or not giving your all in practice and in the weight room. So I think it's more than just coaches making room. You have to think the Dooley kids probably had no clue practice would be so hard work outs so brutal. In essence this isn't what they signed up for.

It all depends on how it's approached cause if not done right then u have to be concerned with how it backs to the kids and HS coaches back home.

In a weird way it's a good issue to have. The fact that CBJ has the amount of players to try and weed out some. It's the opposite situation Dooley was in as he was just trying to get players in to try to fill a full roster, and having lower than normal spots per in some recruiting cycles due to NCAA sanctions. These are the type of little benefits that CBJ has had, and hopefully taking full advantage of.

Butch did say that over the winter break they would find out who was really committed and ready to give their all for TN. Maybe your on to something, a culling of the weak so to speak.

Edit: I did not in any way mean to make it sound like your wife was weak.

For some reason the Edit you made made me laugh. Thank you.

You're fooling yourself. College football is big business now. If Butch wants to keep his job, he will send the dead weight packing. You can talk about class and obligations but you will be demanding his head of he doesn't win and he's not going to win without making cuts.

BINGO. If they are making the grade, that's too bad. As long as the NCAA allows schools to act like this, Butch needs to punt them. He has no choice in this merciless conference.
