March 1997, Manning announces he's staying

It's a shame that we keep having to go back to the 20th Century for reasons to feel pride in our football program.

Anybody want to talk about Peyton Manning dropping his pants in front of a female trainer and ending up as a witness in a lawsuit? Didn't think so.

The winners aren't as perfect as you think and the guys that don't win as much aren't as bad as you think.

The question is are the the two related??

IMO his behavior is connected to his inability to be a winning leader

When you throw 30+ TDs in a 12 game season and lead an offense to 36+ PPG, yet your team only wins 5 games, maybe the offense is the wrong place to put 100% of the blame.

I don't recall CC having multiple run ins with the law, significant rumors of failed drug test, and a work ethic that didn't include film study.

Did he have those same issues?

Had the team been losing the Iceman would have been a likely scapegoat. His performances in Atlanta bowl games made a lot of fans question whether he cared or not in exactly the same manner Bray is questioned. Do you know Bray doesn't watch film? Do you have any proof of failed drug tests? He was a college kid throwing bottles from a balcony. Nothing came of it and it wasn't a big deal. I also said "attitude".

You hit the nail on the head.

Kind of like in 2001 when we won 10 games and Kelley Washington was a phenom. The next year we struggled and he was a "cancer".

The advantage Manning has there is 15+ years of maturation and a career which will inevitably be debated as one of, if not the, all-time best.

All Bray has is three tumultuous years that most fans would rather forget----but that has little to do with him and more of the overall "suckiness" of the team overall.

Completely disagree.

Clausen and Bray may have that far too often uttered characteristic of "California cool," off the field, but in terms of game day attitude, they are very different.

Clausen earned his nickname "Ice-Man" not just because he looked like the guy on Top Gun; he was one of the best QB's on the road I've ever seen--he's the only QB I know of that is undefeated in Gainesville.

Bray seemed to get rattled far too easily when the proverbial <ahem> poo hit the fan.

That's as objective an observation as I can give. I'm not in the habit of bashing our current or former players, it's just my opinion.

I wish Bray well...but I think he would have been MUCH better suited to stay in college one more year.

Bray definitely should stay. Clausen gets a lot of credit for games he didn't really do a lot to win. I think Bray gets a bad rap because his team lost. Both were laid back and not vocal leaders.

When Manning made his announcement our entire high school and middle school stopped to watch. The other thing I will remember about that day is the media members even cheered.

If Bray had our defense during the late 90s, he would be considered one of the best Tn has ever had. If Peyton had of played during this last 3 years, he may have had 3 or 4 more wins, but we would all still feel miserable.

Why did Manning decide to come here in the first place. He never really had any ties to the state, did he? Glad he went here though.

If anyone thinks that his behavior and attitude ISN'T directly connected to his inability to be a winning leader then they are mentally unstable. Lol

I think if Bray had had a coached like Butch, who is really demanding of his players day in day out and is a great example of a winning leader (this more than anything bc Dools was a loser trying to prove he could win) then he could've been great. He at least would've tapped more of that potential, IMO.
