Mark Mangino

Where do you people get these stupid ideas? Mark Mangino isn't even being considered. He was fired from a big 12 school. What makes you think the same wouldn't happen in the SEC?

I agree that Mangino ought not to be very high on the coaching list; however, he was not fired at KU because he was a bad coach.

Mangino was 50-48...why is this conversation even still going.

Dooley is currently 14-17. If we wanted mediocrity we can stick with our current coach.

When Mangino took over, KU had only had 4 winning seasons since 1985. The situation at KU was hardly better than the situation at K-State when Snyder took over.

If you look at the track record between Mangino and Snyder, they are very similar. Five years to put a high-caliber product on the field.

To put Mangino's accomplishments in perspective, he is the first KU coach since 1905 to have back-to-back seasons of 8 wins or more. I would also chalk up his final season (5-7) to the battle between Mangino and Lew, and Mangino being fed up with the KUAD. However, because of that last season, I would rather someone else take a risk on Mangino to make sure that season was an aberration.

Who would win in a foot race- Mangino or Dooley on crutches?

In an ethics contest between Mark Mangino and Bobby Petrino, who do you think would win?

Look, I'm not asking for an angel at Tennessee, but I at least want someone who has some sense of right and wrong. Mangino was a good coach (he was *NOT* mediocre --- you don't win an Orange Bowl at Kansas if you're "mediocre"), but the guy was pretty despicable on an ethical level. And let's not even mention the fact that he'd be a constant health risk.

Why was he despicable on the ethical level? Because he yelled at his players and told them they sucked...when they sucked?

People just do not understand that situation at all.

I have a good buddy who played under both Terry Allen and Mangino. He thinks Mangino is one of the biggest ass holes he has ever met; yet, he also thinks that Mangino and Mangino's staff got more out of each and every player than any other coaching staff could have.

That's what people don't get...yeah, dude has a .500 record at Kansas but...dude has a .500 record...coaching football...AT KANSAS. Clearly the man was going above and beyond the talent level that they had.

Baylor Bears 2 2 .500
Colorado Buffaloes 3 5 .375
Iowa State Cyclones 6 2 .750
Kansas State Wildcats 4 4 .500
Missouri Tigers 4 4 .500
Nebraska Cornhuskers 2 6 .250
Oklahoma Sooners 0 4 .000
Oklahoma State Cowboys 1 3 .250
Texas Longhorns 0 4 .000
Texas A&M Aggies 1 3 .250
Texas Tech Red Raiders 0 4 .000
Total 23 41 .359

Look at who he beat/didn't. I am not impressed. He never beat Teaxas longhorns, Sooners, Texas tech. He beat Ok State and Texas A&M once. He only beat baylor and Nebraska twice.

He had considerably less talent than all but 1 of those teams (Iowa State).

He had .359 win percentage in conference. That is below mediocre in my book.

Joker Philips beat Our beloved Vols with considerably less talent and a receiver at the QB position. In 2010 he beat #10 USCe with less talent. Does that make him a good coaching candidate for the Vols?

I've stated that he is not a good candidate. That does not mean he is not a good coach.

Understood.

This time around I hope we hire either a big time guy like Gruden. Or at least someone with a winning record. Just look at Chizik he was 5-19 at Iowa State, and they wonder why he isn't winning now. With the exception of 2010 and Cam Newton.

Correct, we need to be looking for coaches with proven track records over a long career.

Would he be better considered if his win percentage were 54% instead of 52%?
