Kentucky's Mark Stoops on Coaching Rumors

“I mean, my relationships is strong with the prospects and always will be. I can’t control that, I have no control over that. I don’t want that out there, I don’t want that distraction, I don’t ask for that. As I mentioned, jokingly weeks ago when somebody mentioned that, I mean I’d rather it be that, than when you guys all talking about when they’re going to fire me. So, I can only control trying to win and build a program here”

“I’ve been, and I think we can all understand that I’ve been nothing but committed to doing that here and plan on doing that,” Stoops added.

How do you say "I'm looking for a better job" without saying "I'm looking for a better job." That statement would not give me much comfort if I were a Kentucky recruit.

Thing is, I'm not sure if he'll get offered. Florida State would've been the best fit for him and they passed on him last year. Florida probably sees him as too lowly for them, though he might do quite well down there. Miami seems like a weird cultural fit. Can't see LSU or USC offering him. And I don't think any of the other jobs are necessarily an upgrade.

Except he was at Miami in their heyday as the DB’s coach when they were turning out NFL DB’s like Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Philip Buchanon, Mike Rumph, Alfonso Marshall, James Lewis, Antrell Rolle etc. He coached and helped recruit one of the greatest crops of DB’s from one school many of us have ever seen.

Money did more than any of the coaches did recruiting.

I’m not seeing what y’all are seeing. He’s saying he’s had success at Kentucky, so his name is going to be thrown out there and while he’d prefer not to have to address those rumors, that’s better than having to address rumors that he’s going to be fired because he’s been losing at Kentucky. I don’t read anything in that that says he’s looking for a better job.

The fact that he's clearly dodging the question and not saying anything about sticking at Kentucky says it all. If he gets offered the Florida or Miami job, he gone!

Seriously, this is the least convincing quote I've ever heard:

“I’ve been, and I think we can all understand that I’ve been nothing but committed to doing that here and plan on doing that,” Stoops added.

He "plans" on doing that. Not that he "will" do that. He "plans on doing that" ... unless something changes like he gets an offer from Florida or Miami.

I hadn’t even thought of him going to Florida. He would dominate there.

He'd be a good hire, but I don't know if they'll offer him. Sounds like they are going after Napier. Or perhaps a long-shot bid for his brother. Thought Florida State should've gone after him last time. Think he would've been perfect there. But does sound like he wants the job from his less-than-convincing "sell to recruits".

I could see Penn State if Franklin were to leave.

He isn't leaving Kentucky but every coach, even if they have absolutely zero intention of leaving, has an interest in making it look like they are in demand for other jobs. That's why they will never say "I am not leaving to take the XYZ job." And even when they do, many lie (see Saban).

Stoops is probably one of the most overpaid coaches in CFB...not because he's a bad coach, but because it's Kentucky. His only way to get more pay at this point is to step into an absolute pressure cooker of a job, and it probably isn't worth it because the raise he'd get wouldn't even be that material.

I don’t know how much more he can do with Kentucky, and people are already starting to complain that Stoops hasn’t won the East. Stoops would be smart to move on at this point.

The only people I've heard criticize Stoops for not winning the East are fans of other East schools (Tennessee in particular), in an attempt to tell Kentucky fans that they aren't really that good. I don't think Kentucky fans themselves complain about it.

You are stretching. He said he is committed and plans to be. He said he would rather be talked about for hirings because it means he is succesful. That's not him looking around.

Not saying he wouldnt take another job, just saying these quotes dont say to me that he is gone.

Not winning the East at Kentucky is not the worst of Stoops' failures.

Every single season, Kentucky "Kentuckies" away so many games with inexplicable game-day coaching that is 100% on Stoops and his staff, that even in their best seasons under Stoops, the fans are still left scratching their heads and wondering wtf is going on there.

He'd never survive even 3 seasons at Florida.

The biggest indictment against him as a HC is that he's only 2-7 against Tennessee during a horrible period for our program, and Stoops's 2 best teams have both lost to Tennessee (2018 and 2021). Vandy has had way more success against us over that same time period.

Stoops only has a nail biter home victory over 0-8 Butch/the worst team in school history and a win over Skoal Can during the COVID year. Kentucky really should have beaten us in 2018, 2019, and maybe even this year.

This. I'd be thrilled if UF offered him because we'd start beating them every year for sure. He's a good coach but he's far from great and IMO he's at the perfect place for his abilties. If he went to a place like UF he'd be gone in 3 years and will end up coaching against Butch Jones in the Sun Belt.

He's 29-45 in conference play, and his best SEC record is 5-3.

It's not just UT that he's losing to on a regular basis, and Florida just fired Dan Mullen with a 21-13 SEC record and a year removed from winning the East.
