Markieth Ambles 40 time

While I agree that speed is always a great commodity, it wouldn't hurt to have a smart, sure-handed receiver who can find open space (ala Davone Bess). We already have some speed on this team (Moore, Richardson, Rogers). What we really need is that sure-fire "go to" possession receiver. Hopefully Ambles can not only fit that mold but break it

its easy to pick out the guys that have played the game at a level past highschool.
track speed is track speed, football speed is differnt. there is this thing during the game that kicks in called the adrenal gland, it can work against you too, my first snap i took during a real game under center at the 1AA university i attended my knees felt like jello, but you find a way to make it work for you.

2nd which works against that you are wearing 15-20 lbs of gear (rough est i havent suited up sence 02) wich works against you. last time i checked at a combine or camp you dont run 40 times in pads and helmet.

First, why do people always bring up players from the past? If you havent noticed the change, Football players are getting bigger, stronger and faster every year. So trying to compare him to a Legend is stupid. Jerry Rice was amazing in his time but if he came out of college right now I would bet anything he would not be the WR he was then. He benefited from a perfect offense and a great QB. So I could care less what 40 Rice, or any other former WR ran, its not the same game they used to play. Jerry Rice playing today would be another Wes Welker or Derrick Mason. Good players but not great.

Second, are you serious? Scott was never made for football, he was a track guy 100%.

What did Crabtree run? Calvin Johnson? Randy Moss? Larry Fitzgerald? Terrell Owens?

Bottom line speed kills and the faster the better. To think otherwise for a WR is foolish.

Where to start...

First, to say Jerry Rice would be another Wes Welker or Derrick Mason is one of the top 5 most idiotic things ever said in the history of VN.

Rice played against some of the fastest players in NFL history. HISTORY. Ever hear of Deion Sanders? Darrell Green ran a 4.09 forty. Rice toyed with them and routinely beat them like dogs.

Leonard Scott was an example that shows speed isn't everything. That went over your head, so try Kenny O'Neal. I guess he's better than Jerry Rice. After all, he can run faster.

Speed is very important, and no one said it wasn't. However, it's not the end-all be-all. Sure, these kids would be even more of a threat if they ran a 4.2, but they are pretty dynamic now.

Are you saying we shouldn't sign Ambles? How about Cobbs? Neither run a 4.4. Maybe there's another Kenny O'Neal we can get. Does Usain Bolt have any eligibility?

I don't buy Rice's 40 time being as bad as he ran. They used stop watches and who knows who far off it could have been.

Either way... Jerry Rice had 90+ catches and 1,200+ yards in 2002. He was 40.

Take note.

Here's an example of opinion backed up by logic and evidence -- unlike Head who merely speculates that Rice would not have been the receiver he was in today's game.

Carry on Mr. Voldaddy.

This is easily one of the DUMBEST posts I have ever seen on ANY sports message board. I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that you have never played football in your life, have you? And some of the WR's you pointed out dis-prove your own point. Fitz and TO are by NO means "speed" WR's. They run great routes, get seperation with their great agility, and use their physical strength to go up and get the ball. To even mention Wes Welker and Jerry Rice in the same sentence just further illustrates your complete ignorance of anything football. Speed is important in a WR no doubt......but it is FAR from the MOST important trait. Just look at all the combine warriors that ran fast times, get drafted high.....then do nothing in the league. You should stop letting Al Davis post under your name.
